I thought you needed to have 10 races to be a cat 4?MD80

I just received my USCF license finally yesterday after signing up for it in early April at a race. I was surprised to see I was listed on it as cat 4 for the road and track. I have just finished my 7th race of this season last saturday. I had entered first race, ever, last year but dnf. Its no big deal to me since 4s and 5s race together anyway most of the time but it got me curious if this was a goof, and is it something that needs to be fixed? any Ideas?
Are you a girl?53T

Women start in Cat 4. If you don't qualify as a woman, then there is a mistake at USA cycling. They either sent you teh wrong licence, or they think you are a girl.

Nope, I have a penis, and they dont think I am female cause the license list me as a male. So you think its a goof, huh?

They upgraded you because they think you have a year of experience now. You can ask your local rep to downgrade you if you like, but the upgrade rules aren't really rules, but guidelines. If you can show you are proficient enough after 7 races as a Cat.4 and ask to be moved to a 3, they may very well let you. If you can justify your asking to the people who look at your application, you can go ahead and apply for your US Pro license. There is not like a draft you have to go thru to get it.

If you don't want to be a 4 yet, ask them to downgrade you. Tell them you don't think you have the proper bike control or handling to be a 4 yet and ask them to let you race as a 5 another season. Chances are, they will let you.

But if you ever want to move up and don't qualify, just keep in mind that you can always ask your USCF rep and they can upgrade you.

4 only races). Not always, but often enough.

With permission from the Race Day Official from the USCF you can always race up a catagory. If they let you.

When I was a junior (16 -18) I would race the Juniors Race, then get into the back of the Cat 2 race and just ride as long as I could hang with the pace. My local USCF reps knew me and knew I wasn't squirrly or going to cause problems and only wanted the extra training so they would let me race the Cat 2 races too. If you are a Masters 35+ rider, you can always race the Masters 30+ races or the Senior races... you just can't go to higher numbered races unless you have your license changed (you can't race a 5 race if your license says you're a 4)

Hope that explains some of this for someone...

There are no automatic upgrade computers at USA cycling. You get an upgrade to 4 only after asking for it, and it starts with your regional rep. The guidline is experience in 10 mass start races, and there are no good reasons to ignore that particular guideline.
