Ouch...godammitBill is in Denver

So there I am this morning. Happily cruising along on my bike. 65 degrees, overcast but nice. A fox runs along beside me on the trail, then a little while later a family of rabbits. As I cut through one of the pastures the trail goes through I have to thread my way through a bunch of horses feeding next to the trail. There are other bikers, several runners and everyone says a friendly good morning as I pass. I reach the end of the trail and look down at my computer. I've never hit the end of the trail before my turn around time in the morning before. Hehe, I smell a personal best...so I'm motoring on the way home. Feeling good, big grin on my face and the miles are cooking past (cooking for me is likely barely a simmer for you). Anyway, I come around a slow bend and there are two...well, shall we say big beautiful women walking a yap yap dog. I nicely say 'coming up on your left' and they move their combined 350lbs over to the right. I'm about 10 feet behind them, at 24 or 25mph and just started my 'good morning' greeting when I see that bon bon podium girl number two also has a dog. I couldn't see it from behind as the two of them were blocking my view of the pavement, trees, skyline, sun, moon and mountains. I noticed said wienie dog when it darted from behind the wind blocking duo straight into my path. The leash stretching out in front of me, dog to my left and two rolling road blocks to my right. There was about 5 inches of clear pavement to the left of the dog that I made a dive for. Well, I went about 6 inches instead. Front tire drops, catches and faster than you can say "all you can eat pizza" I'm sliding down the pavement on my side.

Bon Bon #2 says oh my god, are you ok? I've never seen a biker fall over like that. Bon Bon #1 says "your dog took him out". I looked up, after analyzing the torn tights, jacket, jersey, Sidi's....twisted bars, scratched shifter and derailer and said......"good morning". Bon Bon #2 says my dog never touched him...whereas BonBon #1 responds "if he hadn't crashed..your dog would be dead". I just smiled and said...yeah, probably....and I wouldn't have a $3000 scratched up bike and $500 worth of ruined riding gear. But I kept smiling, said "interesting way to start the day...eh?" Stood up, straightened the bars, moved the shifter, clicked back in and road home. And I still beat my personal best. :-) Getting stiff now though...and damn I just bled all over my desk chair. Oh well...off to the shower. Hope your morning was as good as mine.
Please leave God out of this. (NM)94Nole

Sorry to hear about the wipe out. It's shame that you at least didn't get an apology or thanks for not creaming the dog.

It said:

Jesus would slap the sh!t out of you

I laughed for miles. I assure you God has a sense of humor. Look at our president for example...if that's not an act of god playing a prank...I don't know what is. He gets elected on the religious tip and then promptly goes over and kills tens of thousands of people for their oil.

The funniest thing about the religious fanatics in my mind is that they swear up and down that they believe in God and his supposed word. YET, thou shalt NOT kill....means nothing to them. Or they translate that into 'well unless you decide you are justified". Do you see them on the steps of the white house protesting? Nope. Do they denounce their president? Nope. They complain about me saying Godammit in a topic sentence on the net...but killing people is ok.

Jesus would slap the sh!t out of you.

You call on the lord when you want, and the rest of us will call on him when we want. If he doesn't like it, he'll settle up with us in his own good time, right?
You only need to press "Post My Message" once.(nm)94Nole

The dogs were leashed.
The women moved when they heard you approaching.

The women had as much right to be there doing their morning exercise routine as you did.

I sense you have some hostility towards people larger than yourself.

Perhaps 24-25mph was excessive for this trail?
Kidding right?Snyderman
Jun 24, 2003 6:50 AM
You must be kidding, right? The woman didn't have control of her leashed animal. While going 20mph on the trail might have been a little fast, he would have been in trouble even if he was doing 15mph.

I smell a troll itching for a flame fest here.
Most MUTs are 15MPHColnagoFE

I'm guessing he was going too fast for the conditions. MUTs are probably the most dangerous places to ride IMO.
I agree. The "It's all about me" attitude is obvious. (nm)94Nole

Congrats, Bill on still achieving your "personal best". I mean, it is all about you, isn't it? The thought of someone else using your trail.

I never so much as gave them a dirty look. I smiled, said good morning....didn't place any blame on them or make them feel bad in any way. If I had an extra box of cliff bars on me I would have given them up as an offering for daring to assume I would have 6 inches of the clearly marked two lane 6 foot wide trail in which to pass them. Still, I never said a cross word or even gave them the evil eye.

The trails here are two laned, like a roadway. Right side is yours....left is for passing and other direction traffic. They understood that, but their dog didn't. I couldn't very well blame the dog...so I just chalked it up to a funny story to tell later. Road rash in the shower however...is not funny....uh...ouch. :-)

You are a good sport. It is always best to recongize your part in it. Glad you didn't kill the dog or really hurt yourself. Better luck next time!

on both sides.
Where I live, I need to ride a bike path for 3-4 miles, when I go North. When ever I pass people or dogs, I slow to 15 mph or less. You can always trust people, dogs, and cars, to do something goofy.
Ps. For horses, it's best to slow to 10 mph, so that they don't dump their rider.

Little 'g' god could just as easily be referring to the dog he almost hit. After all, Dog is my copilot. Lighten up Francis.

Sorry to hear about the wipeout Bill. Sounds to me like you did everything correctly. Not much you can do about a dog owner that doesn't have the presence of mind to cinch up the leash after you gave them plenty of notice that you were passing, speed or not. As another poster said (or was it you), it would have been hairy at 15 mph.

Get some Silvadene (sp?) cream if you can. Works wonders on that darn road rash.
UNPREDICTABILITY is the name of the game.......BIG RING

when it comes to other living things. Slowing things down makes dealing with the unpredictable a little easier. For example the people who MOVE to the left when you say, "on your left." Ya, those things = 10-15 MPH. You can usually pick the types who will F that one up. It isn't the runners or other cyclists, it is usually the walkers who are 3-5 line abreast on the trail. You just know at least one is going to mess it up.
Glad to see you could keep your humor about it.KG 361

As you already acknowledged, was at least partally your fault. As a general rule for me, I slow down and really watch for dogs-you never know what they'll do. Glad you're ok.
Obviously, their weight caused your crash! Shame! Shame! Shame!PseuZQ
Jun 24, 2003 9:49 AM
How dare they go out for some exercise and get in your way!
Granted...sctri
Jun 24, 2003 2:43 PM
He didnt need to include the info about their weight, but it was factual, had then been walkers with extremly large feet that took up most of the lane, I suspect that he would have mention such a detail instead.

RC
I bet you would have slowed to 5mph if they were podium girls<g>loki_1
