|... I sometimes find I need some gel, but make my own. A dab of "joy jelly" (personal lubricant such as KY) and a dash of table salt does the trick just fine.
Medical technicians sometimes find that some patients need a little more prep. They may need to shave off body hair in the affected area, or use an abrasive on the skin. The modern self-adhesive disposable electrodes they now use for ECGs has made the need for these measures rare, but that doesn't help you with an HRM.
Most people don't need anything once they've worked up a sweat, but it may help you to get the unit working for resting HR or prior to starting a workout.

|I have found that in high winds and days where it is cool and harder to get a good sweat going my HRM will give me some very poor readings.|

|I use the Performance Bike brand and it works very well in situations of extended workouts when you body starts to dehydrate. When sweating starts to slow down or stop, I loose the heartrate reading and find I get more consistent readings using the gel.|

|I got my Polar 710 over the winter. In the first couple of weeks I lost the signal from the strap a few times. It was a pain because I was wearing 5 layers. I knew my LBS had some of the gel so I just picked it up. I haven't had problems since.
I'd say it isn't neccessary unless spit doesn't cut it.
I've also found that liquid hand soap works.

|Like most blossoming youths, I started using nothing. It was up to the individual to learn for himself. It's not like our culture encourages parents to provide guidance in this area.
When I was a young buck, all we had was spit, vaseline, motor oil, baby oil, olive oil, peanut oil, vegetable oil, straight lard, congealed bacon grease, or cherry pie filling. Now the miracles of modern chemistry have brough us these wonderful high tech lubes.
To be honest, when I was young it didn't take much to get my heart rate up so lotion wasn't necessary. After a few years though, I started needing something extra to enhance the contact, especially during winter months. Vaseline is a bit too greasy and messy, but as long as you shower immediately after, your skin should stay healthy.
Just remember, it's perfectly natural and healthy.
