|7 spd derailleurs compatible w/9 spd shifters?||mtbgirl|

|So I've got an old 7-speed front & rear derailleur & crankset (all shimano)...would they be compatible with an ultegra 9-speed STI shifter? I'm building up a bike & trying to use some old parts I have laying (lying?) around to save some moola.

|You should do your part to stimulate the economy and buy all new stuff...
Secret, I use a 7 speed 105 der with my Ultegra STI's with 9sp cassette and 8 speed crank. No problems. Shift as well as my 9sp Ultegra der.

|Of course, if you plan to use the 9-speed to shift a 7-cog cassette, the answer is no, they are not compatible. On a 9-speed cassette, the answer is a clear and certian "probably".
BTW, the parts are 'laying' around (unless you mean that they are going around telling untrue things to people...).

|yes. The derailleur is agnostic about the number of speeds.. I'm using a rear derailleur from a 6spd group (Exage Sport) with 8spd DuraAce shifters on a 8sp DA cog and it works just fine. There may be some chain width issues with the front der and crankset, since 9spd is marginally narrower than 8spd and earlier, but there's an excellent chance it will work.|| |
