I've read many a time that one should replenish on carbs within a 1/2 after finishing a ride. What is the reasoning behind this, I'm inquiring about the 1/2 hour, not the carbs.

Because during exercise muscle cells move glucose transporters to the cell surface to transport blood glucose into the cell. So by quickly consuming carbs you take advantage of the temporarily (due to the recent exercise) relatively large glucose transport capacity of the cells to replenish the depleted muscle glycogen. It's not all that critical if you haven't exercised that hard (and depleted glycogen stores) or aren't exercising again within the next 24 hours or so. The normal insulin mediated transport of glucose into the muscle cells is adequate under most circumstances to replenish glycogen stores before exercising again.
