J2 is my training partner and ride companion on many weekly/weekend and out of town rides. he's a big boy like me, with a strong diesel engine, and surprisingly a billygoat on the big climbs in dahlonega, and most recently chattanooga.

he is a former mtb racer and currently enjoys getting schooled by the "stacked" cat 4/5/masters field in local RRs and crits. J2 is also a cyclocross phenom--the improper combination of mud, suffering, and skinny tires seems to suit him well.

we started riding together ~3 years ago (is that right?), and have consistently both gained form each season since. this month will be the biggest mile month for both of us, as we will both be logging over 1000 road miles.

J2 pushes me to get faster and ride stronger & more aggressively. i push him to ride farther and suffer for a longer period of time (instead of all at once, LOL). two years ago he whined about riding 60 milers, last year it was centuries, and this year i've tricked him into training for a 200-miler in september. his crafy ways have brought my overall average speed up more than 2 mph in nary a year's time, and he now has me attacking early and often on cagey group rides.

when he started riding our weekly legburner, we all called him "Big Leg J", due to his extraordinarily large stumps (eight cylinder, i assure you).

here's a nice pic of J & J2 (J2 on the right). that high-fashion headware sports images of disney's goofy and others. he's a fashion mogul.

Let's get the formalities out of the way; what is your position on campy v. shimano? Steel, carbon or ti? how many spacers is acceptable? fat guys on $4k bikes?

I will be a new resident of Knoxvegas the first week of July, so I'll keep an eye out for y'all in TN.
Wow. That didn't take long... (nm)kjr39

oh man, put on the spot already. campy/shimano - campy rules, but i run shimano on my mtb bike. steel/carbon/ti - steel is real, also have carbon, very smooth, have not had a ti bike - yet. spacers - gotta be talking about headset spacers - ya go over 2" worth of spacers and you really might want to look at another frame size. fat guys on 4k rigs - hey, at least they're out there and keeping the bike companys in business so it's all good.
moving to knoxville - great training and seems to have a good race sceen but come west to memphis for our fall century in sep.!

I've missed too many rides lately with travel. Might see you tonight. If not, it'll be a couple of weeks (the midnight ride maybe).

Take care.
