Denver riders, Any info on Lookout Mtn.?Kvonnah

I do far too much flat riding and I want to hit a serious climb. Can anyone tell me the grade and distance of the climb up Lookout Mtn. road to HWY 40? I plan is to start in Golden, climb To Hwy 40 and then descend back to town. I am pretty much a novice but I live in Co. so it seems ridiculous NOT to climb mountains.

Any info will help. Thanks in advance!

ps. to give an idea where I am condition wise I am 36, I rode 42 mi in 2:11 two days ago and did 20 in 1 hr 3 seconds today. My average HR was 152 and as mentioned before, this was all pretty flat riding. As I said, I'm a novice so I am guessing I will finally have a use for the triple if I try this climb.
Some thoughts, but not hard data.....RickC5

I live in Aurora and also do lots of flat(ter) riding.

I have driven Lookout Mtn several times in the 18 years we have lived here in the Metro area, but can't give you hard numbers. As I recall, its about 3-4 miles, possibly a bit longer. Its also pretty steep, with switchbacks. Kinda like Flagstaff Mtn in Boulder.

I would agree that your triple will come in handy.

I ride up Lookout often, but never time the whole thing. I am guessing that it takes 40-45min from downtown Golden to Buffalo Bill's grave (at a good clip). The grade is very steady and not too steep (not NEAR as steep as Flagstaff in Boulder). I have no problem w/ a 39/27. From Buffalo Bill's grave to I-40 it is a few more miles but they are rolling and can be done at a casual pace. Then you FLY down I-40. I would guess that the whole loop takes about 1:30. It is ~5-6 miles of climbing (from downtown Golden).
Thanks for info...Kvonnah
