|Many people are complaining lately about the relentless rain. You can count me in, but I just got sick of it yesterday. After I dropped my son off at school (on Memorial Day) to make up a lost day due to weather, I came home jumped on my bike and rode in the rain (not a torrential downpour). It was my first time intentionally riding in rain.
I'm sure most serious cyclists find this to be no big deal, but for those of you held indoors by the rain, get out there. It was a ball. I felt like a kid out there again. There runners were out in droves, but I only saw one other biker. It was a liberating experience. The rain won't hold me in anymore.
Just use your best judgement regarding conditions for visibility.

|Over the last winter and last couple of months have gotten real real use to starting ending rides in rain not just showers but steady rain thruout whole ride, been lots of riding the surly fixie In NC May nearly 10 inches of rain normal little over 3. But hey at least I can ride thats the main thing.

|I presently have a road and a mtb bike. I use the mtb (w/slicks) for commuting to work but would love to buy a Surly frame (or complete bike this fall), maybe a fixed gear. I think I'll be taking a closer look at the SteamRoller & the Cross Check. Just curious if you have either of those and how you like it.

|Hey Jeff great pictures of the CT race, anyways have the surly steamroller it is 4130 tubing which is surprsing very nice to ride I cheated a little and put on a carbon fork the headtube is 1" the frame comes with no cable stops at all one set of H2O brazeons the chain stays will be wide enough for tires up to about 35-38mm wide also no rear brake bridge mount so only front brake but thats all you need on a fixie, color is not real fancy baked bean color overall I would highly reccommend steamroller I run a 46x16 gearing or sometimes 48x16

|I built this up over the winter as a rain/commuter bike. I opted for the cross-check frame. I run wide tires in the winter and didn't want to worry about fitting them in the stays. The cross check will allow 45mm tires plus fenders.
There's nothing wrong with the Steamroller, but it can only be fixed or SS. The Cross-Check allowed that plus gives me options if I want to get creative in the future.

|Awesome set-up - that's what I'll be looking for! Nice pic, too! Yup, I knew the Cross-Check had some advantages. I know the Steamroller also has wide chainstays for wide tires...I guess just not quite as wide as the CC. Do you know if the Steamroller allows fenders (not the clip-ons, but the full ones you have)? Did you buy the frame and parts new? In either case, what did it approx. cost you?

"Proprietary FFF (Fatties Fit Fine) chainstays and our custom fork give room for tires up to 700x38c with fender clearance left over. (P.S. - use clip-on fenders!!)"
There apear to be no eyelets for racks or fenders on the stays or the fork. I guess full fenders will require a Cross-Check.
I built this bike up with a mix of old parts plus some new stuff. LBS manager is a friend so I got the frame/fork for $350. They can be found for about $390 on-line. I had a new rear wheel built. Other than that, I bought a new crank, bars, stem, pedals, seat, and tires. In all, about $600-700 to finish.

|I'm not a big fan of riding in the rain, but I do ride in the rain from time to time. I'd probably do it a lot more often though if it weren't for all the crazy drivers.
It's always good to ride conservatively in traffic, but the rain just makes things much more complicated.

|I generally don't ride in the rain, but will continue riding if caught by showers because I'm not going to get any wetter after the first few minutes. Sunday I caught caught in a heavy downpour 28 miles into a 50-miler and rode all the way back in showers. That convinced me, as always, that riding in the rain sucks. My glasses get all spotted up so I can't see, I am more worried about getting hit by a car, and have to be very careful about not slipping on oil spots or paint stripes. Paceline riding totally sucks in the rain unless you like getting sprayed in the face. To top it all off, you have to spend an extra 30 minutes drying, cleaning and relubing the bike after the ride. Fortunately, we generally don't get that many washout days in NC -- this spring being the exception -- so I usually lift weights, walk or go to spin class when it rains. |
If I lived where it rained all the time, I probably would install some decent fenders on my bike, get some rain gear, and set up a beater rain bike. But I don't think Ii would enjoy rain riding any more. One of the things I like about cycling is enjoying the scenery and that's hard to do when you can barely see through your glasses.

|I don't mind riding in a spring rain, but this is so relentless nothing is drying out! I rode home last night in my windbreaker ... it wasn't raining but I sweated so heavily it might as well have been. I hung the shirt up ... this morning it was still wet.
On my soldering bench at work, I wet the sponge on Friday. It is still wet today. Usually dries out overnight.

wear a cycling cap, bill forward, under helmet. pretreat the cap with scotchgard.
wool socks or weatherproof shoe liners or covers.
helmet cover or something similar if it's chilly.
clear or amber lensed-glasses.
high visibility colors.
bag balm or other petroleum-based lube can be helpful in many places on a rainy day.
i'm pining for a burley rainjacket. right now i'm using a $10 plastic jacket from nashbar or performance. these get as wet inside from sweat as outside from rain.
shoes/after: open straps, remove insoles, stuff with newspaper overnight, leave in a dry/warm location (thanks Wonderdog).
for longer wet rides, i like to carry a change of socks, head cover, and sometimes jersey and shorts in waterproof baggies.
fenders with flaps.
coat all hex heads with grease or wax, OR treat them all after a rain ride with a shot of WD40. rust will develop otherwise.
framesaver applied yearly, liberally.
compulsively clean & lubed chain & r.der pulleys.
weekly or more frequently check tires for imbedded debris.
hang bike after rain rides to let water drain from tubes.
headlight/rear red light.

|When I drove home this evening, the thermometer in my car told me that the outdoor temp was 98. I left the house this morning at 5:50 in shorts a short sleeve jersey and a temp of 68. How do I deal with this? ;-) In all seriousness, I hope you all dry out on the right coast.|| |
