Mountains of Miseryms

I did the Mountains of Misery on Sunday. Although my time (8:49) was not as good as I had wanted, it was a lot better than last year when I bonked on the final climb. Based on the order of the posted photos for the final climb, it looks like about 340 people finished ahead of me and about 100 finished behind me. The ride was fairly uneventful (in a good sense) for me. I followed the RBR common wisdom for centuries (i.e., rest before the ride, watch your hydration and nutrition, don't spend too much time in rest stops) and was successful. HOWEVER, the final climb still was very difficult for me. Using Topo 3.0, it appears to me that the average grade of the last three miles of the ride was around 9% and the last two miles was around 10%. Does anyone have any information about the grade of the final climb?

Glad to hear you enjoyed the ride. I too had a good day, finishing 2nd place in 5:22. Yeah, only one place behind the top rider, Scottie, but light-years behind in strength ... he danced away on the day's first climb and rode the remaining ~85 miles solo, and still spanked our pacelining group by 16+ minutes (!!).

I don't know any more about the grade of Mountain Lake than you do, but it definitely puts the capital M in Misery. Hope all had safe, rain-free Memorial-weekend riding. Hopefully I'll have some pictures to post soon.

That is an impressive result. I am looking forward to your pictures.

I finished Mountains of Misery in 7:42. I started the base of the final climb with an average speed of 17mph and finished the ride with an average speed of 15mph. Pretty slow last few miles but plenty of fun mixed in with the pain.
Here are the stats that one of the guys I rode with recorded on his CicloSport - nothing specific on the last climb but we're certain the 21% was recorded either at the final hairpin turn of the Cat 2 climb or one of the last hairpin turns of the final climb:

Vertical Feet Climbed: 13,530
Feet Descended: 12,620
Average Gradient Up: 6%
Average Gradient Down: 6%
Maximum Gradient Up: 21%
Maximum Gradient Down: 16%
Thanks for the stats-nmms

I live in Blacksburg and ride the road in and around this great town daily. Let me tell you, the last climb of the Mountains of Misery is serious. I've heard locals describe seeing Greg Lemond struggle up it during the Tour du Pont. Check the link below for a pdf of the elevation profile of the ride. Congrats to all who finished.

That didn't work. Hope this does.
