Hi all,

Well, Ive ridden a TON for me this year as I'm just getting into road biking. I'm loving every minute on the bike, but I'm having some balance issues (I'm still working on a lot of the basics) For instance I'm just not confident enough in reaching down to grab my bottles during rides, and im not terribly confident in switching hand positions on the bars (drops to hoods, etc.) Can people suggest some stuff that I could do to help me get a little more confident?

I hate to over-simplify this, but confidence comes with experience. Having said that, a great way to get over your anxiety about grabbing water bottles is to eliminate water bottles -- use a CamelBak. You'll end up drinking more water because the valve is right near your mouth, and you'll never have to reach for bottles again.

As for switching hand positions, I'm not sure why this would bother you because the transition from one position to another takes less than a second. If you're relaxed on the bike, you can literally take your hands off the handlebars for several seconds. Experienced riders can ride "handless" practically all day.

Maybe your arms are too stiff because you're too tense. Relax your arms; think of them as very pliable shock absorbers instead of steel rods. When you want to change hand positions, do it one hand at a time. Relax and unweight your arms, then slowly move to the new position.

Is that like a cat standing with his back arched and fur up?
