Runner up: "Yup, that's a whole 'nother bowl of chili" (referring to a mexican rider trying to make the transition from stage winner to GC contender)

Winner: "The fans are gonna get some bling-bling tchotchkes today!" (referring to Giro riders tossing their helmets aside at the foot of the final climb)

I love this guy.

Bobke: "Beat Poet of the Peloton"serbski

YES! The "bling-bling" comment elicited a great bemused reply from Paul Sherwin! How Bobke managed to make use of a combination of rap-street lingo/Yiddish in the context of bicycle racing commentary deserves some type of linguistic achievement award! He needs to a)write a book about his experiences as a pro and b) follow it up with a book signing/reading tour! Seriously, he could pen a great look into the peloton with his dry, self-effacing style that would become a cult-classic. He is, as once described in some magazine, the "beat-poet of the peloton"...

I appreciate the "beat generation" remark relating to Bobke; like some of the Beat writers and comedians he can get his ideas across in straight journalistic prose as well as in slang-ier words; for writing it straight, read "The Day the Strong Men Cried" about the Gavia stage of the 1988 Giro. It's a f%&$ing crime that he's never made it into any
"best of" sportswriting anthology.
