Buying my first bike - Need Helprm1970

I'm in the process of buying my first bike. Interested in some advice on what brand/model to buy and what to look for in a bike.

Probably I will buy my bike locally since I live in a college town far from big cities. The two bike shops in town offer Giant, Cannondale, Gary Fisher, and Trek.

Also, what other accessories should I get with the bike (besides the bike carrier for the car).

I am looking to spend around $350 (give or take $50). I am mostly interested in a bike for paved and gravel trails. From what I read it looks like a comfort bike is the one to go. However, what brand gives me the best brand and model gives me the best bang for my buck?
"Comfort bike" or used mountain bike with rigid fork maybe?Eug

My GF has a comfort bike. Very upright of course. Another option is a fairly upright used mountain bike.

Just remember to swap the knobby tires to something with a relatively smooth centre strip, with big knobs only on the sides. Riding full knobbies on paved trails is like riding with the brakes on all the time.

Remember to factor in the helmet, multi-tool, tire levers, patch kit, extra tubes, bottle cage, better saddle (because nearly all comfort bike seats suck), locks, etc.
