can too much preride hydration cause side stitches?timwat

Occasionally I get side stitches that make me pull over and take a break(not to mention get dropped severely). Most of the times I have been well hydrated. Could it be related? Its usually on a group ride too, could it be from riding too hard? Is there any way to prevent or relieve the problem?

If you drink too much too fast before riding, that most definitely can cause side stitches.

I was getting them, but only on hard group rides. As my fitness improved they are no longer an issue. I never got them on solo rides.

Happens to me when I start out hammering hard without warming up first. I generally have to back off a little and it subsides...while I get dropped severely, grrrrr!

but it worked for me. My Dad and I used to run 3-4x's a week and he taught me a trick for this. Try breathing with your belly, instead of heaving with your chest try expanding your belly when you breathe. I think it had something to do with using your diapragm. Obviously slowing down is part of the equation, but I never had to stop for a stitch again. I just ran through them.
