8 speed rings - alternatives to Shimano, & availability?BergMann

I'm looking to replace a set of dying rings on an older set of Dura-Ace cranks.
I'm running an 8-speed chain, and have heard that 9-speed inner-rings are spaced closer to the big ring. Am I right in assuming that I'd be better off with 8 speed rings if I can find them? Has anyone actually tried an 8 speed chain with 9-sp. rings?

I've had good success with Race-Face rings on my MTB as a more affordable alternative to Shimano. Does anyone make decent aftermarket rings that can at least keep up with Ultegra in terms of shifting performance?

As a final note, if anyone knows where I can get a deal on a set of 8-speed rings, I'm o.k. with anything in the Ultegra/Dura-Ace performance range, but I am _not_ flexible on the sizes: I need 53x39 (i.e. Shimano's "B" setup).

http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/ for the cranks and I'm sure there are plenty of 8sp cog dealers; but here is just one: http://www.branfordbike.com/cassette/cog.html. Call Tim @ Branford to discuss your needs; great guy. Peter will also give you all the info you need for the crank-rings.
