I am going to the beach for a couple of weeks in June. Does any one know where I can rent borrow or steal a road bike to use when I am down there? I am planning on bringing my own pedals. Thanks

Check out the Rental Bikes link at www.bicycleclub.org, the site for Sarasota Manatee Bicycle Club, Inc. The shop I use most is Ringling Bikes in Bradenton. The guys there are mostly local racers and probably will have some decent bikes for rent. If you call them, ask for Dave Holt, he and his wife Julie are the owners.
The Ride calendar is also posted, hope to see you at one of the Club Rides if it fits your schedule.
Thankswink

I will call down there today. Do you know a good bike route from Brandeton to Siesta Key?

There isn't really a good route down there, its about 30 miles or so, mainly on city roads, etc.
You might want to call the Sarasota Bicycle Center instead and see what they have for rent. They will be a lot closer to Siesta Key and its pretty easy to get to the Key from where they are located on Bee Ridge Road, if you tell them where you are staying I am sure they can give you a map to follow.
Bring light weight clothes, its already in the 90s down here and will be hotter in June.

and contacted Ringling. They had plenty to offer at $100 for a week but I decided to bring my own bike in the end. They told me to bring my own pedals and shoes so you have a good plan.

The comment about city roads is accurate. We have family there so I had some idea of the less busy roads.

I had never ridden where the terrain was so FLAT!!! You just put it in a gear and leave it. For the first time, I personally understood why some people are in love with a particular gear combination. I could also see myself on a fixed gear down there. You gotta do something to make the flatlands interesting.....

Whatever you do, don't tell anyone how nice Siesta Key is. The secret's not really out yet....

Well, if you like quiet and interesting, next time you are down, try Boca Grande...works for me.

Keepon: I live in Bradenton and know what you mean about it being flat. The only "hills" we have are the Interstate overpasses.... we do sometimes have strong prevailing East and West winds that give you a little something to work against, but that's about all.
Glad you enjoyed your stay. If you come down again, check with the guys at Ringling about their regular rides or check our Club ride schedule, we always like to see new faces. In Sarasota, there are some good rides out of Bikes n'Java on Hillview, so give them a call.
