I was on my way from Nigeria to Japan and decided to see one day of the Giro d'Italia. Having never been to a professional cycling event of this magnitude, I really didn't know what to expect. Fortunately, I had lived near Catania previously and I knew my way around Sicily. This proved to be a major asset in finding a few good places to see the peloton go by.

Once I got over the parking issue, I found a good spot to view the start of the race. I was expecting a big procession of bikes leaving the starting line. It was more like a Sunday morning group ride; as only half the racers were at the line when the whistle was blown. Quite interesting to watch the riders come out to the pack of support cars to cross the start line! This was the "Exciting" start in Messina!

Being a De Rosa King owner I just couldn't pass up the opportunity to take this photo.

The one thing I did learn about viewing an event like this; leave the camera at home! I started out shooting a lot of photos. After the first stop I didn't try to take any further photos. I found I was missing all the action while trying to capture a good photo; and believe me, if you don't have a press pass to get inside the fence you don't stand a chance of getting a good shot. Take a look at my one "Almost Good photo" of Cipo at the starting line. I missed a really good shot due to the kid standing next to me hitting my camera.

All in all, it was a fun day! However, the coverage was much better on TV. It was interesting to see what / how the pros rode. I probably would have gotten a lot more out of this experience if my Italian had been MUCH better! As expected, the driving was chaotic and the food and wine were fantastic.

Ride On!

...one who was actually there? For example, it sure looks like most Shimano guys are running the new DA. While hanging at the start did you notice any interesting trends in set-up/frames/bars or anything (granted, I know that later they are flying by rather quickly!). Very cool pictures and I dig the seeing the arm of the "Kodak Moment"-spoiling kid as Super Mario whizzes by!!!
