Trek 5200 or Specialized Allez Pro?(14 posts)

Trek 5200 or Specialized Allez Pro?EngerSal

Hay y'all:
Who has thoughts on these two rides:
The Allez Pro aluminum E5 frame with full dura-ace and ksyrium elite wheelset versus the 5200 OCLV carbon frame with full ultegra and bontrager race lite wheelset.

IF price and fit were both equally good -- and you could only have 1 of the 2 -- which would you go with and why?

Fit is not going to be equal. They are two completely different bikes. You really need to ride both and pick the one that feels the best. Both have good components but the Specialized has an edge in DA and Ksyriums. That being said, if the Specialized doesn't fit, good components are worthless.
Ride both and buy the one you're most comfortable on.

ride both! The Allez does have the edge w/DA, but I don't think the Ksyrium Elite's are much better than the Bontrager Race Lite's. You need to ride both. I was looking at the Allez last year and, upon riding it, found it to be very efficient, but harsh. I tested it back to back w/a CAAD 5 C'dale, which I thought had a smoother ride. I don't know if the difference was due to tire pressures not being equal, but the C'dale isn't compact and it has the shaped seatstays. Then...I tested out the 5200 and ended up buying an '01 OCLV120 frameset, but built up w/DA and Race X-Lites! =)

ride both, ride both, ride both!

I have the 5200 right now, and before that I had the allez elite (2001) and I'd take the 5200 over the allez any day.
But go for whatever feels more comfortable, but I'd really consider the 5200 more, the frame is so much more comfortable especially on longer (50+ Mile) rides.

I will probally disappear off the board for awhile.

It keeps me away from the T.V!

Bull,

Congratulations and best of luck to you and your wife - I'm sure you can sneek a peak at this site occasionally between changing nappies!

Try to get lots of sleep prior to your Baby's birth!

Best Regards,

I test rode both (and others) before I purchased a 5200. I knew the Allez wasn't for me when my one mile test ride almost shook the fillings out of my teeth.
