Report on Assault on Mt. Mitchellbigrider

The Assault on Mt. Mitchell started with no glitches as we turned on the tv in the hotel room at 5:00am The weather forcast was improved and predicted only occasional showers. We gathered at the hotel lobby and you can see a pic of me and my hill climbing buddy as we ventured to the ride start area.

We arrived at the start area and got another pic. It started occasionally raining at 6:10 and rained the entire ride of 102 miles.

The pace started out at 25 to 27 mph and I saw the motorcycle for 13 miles until a three bike crash and lactic acid told me that I would need to slow the pace.
I felt like I was riding with a milk jug over my head, the visibility was poor. Here is a pic of some poor soul climbing the last thirty miles. You needed a ticket after the 70 mile mark to get to ride to Mt. Mitchell. It is ironic that you get to buy a ticket to experience the pain of this mountain climb. We don't have mountains like this around here since it is the highest peak east of the Mississippi

Finally after 102 miles I arrived at the peak of Mt. Mitchell. Here are a couple pictures at the top. I couldn't believe the amount of bottles, tubes and extra food people were getting rid of to lighten the load. It was almost like sailors throwing cargo off a sinking ship. My arrival time was 7:15 and that included stops. I am not sure but if this was a preparation for the Nightmare Tour or just a premonition of the suffering.

I assumed you were the guy without the blacked out face...er...browned out face. By sheer proportion, I was guessing that if little guy was "bigrider", then the sh*t faced bigguy, must be HUGE. So, how tall are you??

I rode with a guy in Colorado a couple of years ago who was 6'7", 250lbs+ and could crank up hills with the best of them. He amazed me. He claimed it was becuase all he did was climb mountains at home and he got used to the pain. He wasn't the fastest, but he never stopped and never slowed down. He was a blast to follow in a paceline.

The problem is they never return the favor on the hills. The only complaint I get on the flats is that I completely block out there view. They get no change of scenery.

Just think of it lke this.....riding on the parkway to Mt. Mitchell is actually easier then the climbs around Asheville. The parkway just seems to glide under your tires and you can attain faster speeds going uphill. Its the last 2 miles that are the most fun and tough :D
I thought rt. 80 was torturebigrider

The road got steep and I knew there was 20 more miles of that stuff ahead.

thats why I blacked my face out. That and I was afraid all those girls that Spirito posts pictures of would start calling or emailing. Ha Ha.My friend finished in 6:38. The little guys just have the advantage on the climbs. He almost broke 6 hours one year.
I thought that maybe you were in a witness protection . . .ms

Someone has good eyes! That sure does look like one of Luke's logos. The color and other markings on the jersey made me think of the Dreamride's Nightmare around Lancaster Co. until the logo got pointed out.
