NOT A SPOILER....comment on GiroClydeTri
May 13, 2003 5:23 AM
Anybody else notice in first stage the comment by one of the guys that the Giro intentionally did not have a time trial to start the tour off so as to try to get Cipo in the pink jersey? If so, that is quite bush. Any race of that stature should never set it up intentionally to favor anybody...

Paul, Phil, and Bob's voice sound better than the

wind through the pines
water lapping onto the shoreline
birds singing just before sunrise

You get the picture,
I love to watch the tours on OLN

PS I was shocked at how Bob nastied on Pantani for being a tactical retard just to try to spoil Cippo's chances for a win. It sounds like Bob flat out hates Pantani

Bob Roll is an old world rider... strange being that he is American and most Americans don't have that sense of history and nostalgia in the peleton, but Bob Roll in his racing days was one of the first riders of 7-11 to be fully accepted in the peleton because of his traditional attitude and respect for the sport. Riders like Davis Phinney weren't as accepted, at least not as quickly. He fancied himself a world class sprinter and didn't care who got in his way... but riders like Roll and Hampsten were a little more sensitive to the fact that they were fish out of water and tried hard to adapt to the customs of the European peleton. You have to remember that in the mid 80's when they started racing in Europe, the American lifestyle was not a part of the peleton.

That said, Pantani's actions are bush-league. He did the same crap a few years ago in the Tour. He has no respect for any other rider in the peleton except for himself. If I can't win, I sure as hell am not going to let Cippolini beat Binda's record... what kind of attitude is that? And Cippolini even flirted with trying to help Pantani get a ride on Domina Vacanze so Pantani could get a ride in the Tour. But for Pantani to attack knowing all he is going to do is pull up after he hurts one particular rider, but not attack for the win.. it's crap. It's as bad as sliding in studs up on the other teams top scorer in soccer, or late hitting the other teams quarterback out of bounds in football. It's a bush-league tactic that shows you are only thinking of yourself and your personal glory... it's arrogant and rude.... that's why Bob was so harsh on Pantani about it. I personally tend to agree with him. I lost all respect for Pantani when he pulled that crap in the Tour.. this, to me, just proves I was right about this guy. All his talent is wasted on him because he has the attitude of a 12 year old child. I wish I had his talent... I would try to make some good of it instead of trying to just create a bigger name for my over-inflated ego.

I guess you're not aware of whole Domina/Mercatone merge mess, also possible Pantani transfer to Domina for tour. Domina didn't have enough $$$ so Cippo used proposed merge to attract sponsors. As soon as Domina had funds they walked from the table.

But even leaving sour grapes and italian feud behind for Marco this is the only chance to ride this tour. Bad performance by Super Mario, and Marco is on his way to a couple TdF stage wins.

And last Mercatone was the faithful supporter through all his problems, and what is the best way to create publicity?

CP

PS and don't get upset about one team eliminating another's leader even if they don't have a shot at podium. All pro teams do it if it benefits them.

I love to hear Bob's insight. I know that Phil is a great play by play announcer calling the race but every time Bob parts his lips it is
funny
insightful
and/or
accurate

I hadn't heard Bob speak so directly negative about anyone prior to this. I guess his dander got up by Pantani and his shenanigans.

Besides, Cipo didn't help himself by getting dropped on that hill/mountain anyway.

That didn't seem to be a 381. The tubes looked like the diamond shaped KX frame; the decals and rear stay seemed to be 461. It wasn't painted in team colors either.

Anyone know what they're riding this year?
I think they are riding the new Look 486 (nm)philippec

They actually didnt even ride the 381 last year either... They were on the 386 in blue. This year it looks like most of them are on the KX or KX light. I think they do get a choice in frames though.

They are on the KX Light - Cyclesport said it was the decision of Oscar Sevilla. Too bad.. those new 486s look nasty! (nasty as in good, not nasty as in bad)

Seemed that way; I know it was a diamond tubeset. Tough to know from the motorcycle shots.

Perhaps 486 for TT? Looks like it could be built up for a great TT bike.
