|At one time I was thinking of getting a carbon frame... until I concluded that they would chip and brake if ever banged up. So what are your experiences with carbon frames holding up. just thought maybe I eliminated carbon out of ignorance.|

|than other materials, but that doesn't mean they are not "strong enough". Think about carbon forks and the abuse they take year in, year out. CF has a lot of clearcoat on it that protects it from chipping and stones. However, a bad crash and scrape will potentially damage the frame, but I just got a Trek OCLV and I am not concerned as I don't race it and will enjoy it as a fair weather bike. I have my bullet proof ti bikes as well. Under normal conditions, you should be able to keep a CF bike for a lot longer than you will want to ride it.|

|I've been down twice with minor accidents, scraped the left hand brake/shifter and scapes on the saddle and pedal. No damage to frame in either case. I ride a lot of poorly surfaced mountain roads and rattle the frame pretty hard. I did have to replace a carbon fork that was showing a tiny crack at the steerer tube, but frame was inspected by the factory and found to be unaffected. I'm 6'2" 195#.|

|Like a crash wouldn't damage any frame, no matter the material that it's made of. Even your bullet proof ti bike.|

|But....if you crash and find cracks don't get back on it. I crashed hard on a Giant and refused to ride the bike afterward. Many people I know in the CF industry said don't ride it. So I got a good deal on a replacement Giant frame. Now if you crash any other material hard you may dent or crack it as well. Anything made to be super light can be prone to damage. You need to balance the planned use for the bike, the cost to replace, the weight etc... A superight, very expensive carbon or exotic frame might be an expensive proposition upon crashing.|

|How many aluminum frames have dents in the top tube from simply falling over into something? At least carbon won't dent ;)
Seriously, you buy anything that is light and it will tend to be a bit more fragile, but I would not want to get into an accident in a frame of any material.

|I had a Trek OCLV 5900. I crashed it once in a race hard and it held up perfectly. Then a car pulled out in front of me while I was going 28mph down hill. The frame has only scratches and a destroyed fork. I have been told to send the frame to Trek but the woman who hit me is going to replace it and then some. I am going to see if I can buy back the bike after the case is closed at a very low cost. Then I will send it back to Trek to see if I can get a new frame at cost or something since I have friends there. The rest of my bike, handle bars , DA shifters etc didnt hold up so well and scattered across the road next to me. I was hit very hard and so was the bike. I ended up about 18 feet from where the car hit me. I was highly impressed by OCLV durability...by the way my SRM amazingly worked perferctly when my coach tested it out on his bike a few weeks ago and road the GILA with it. That amazed me even more|

|Let me know how that buy-back goes--wish I'd known one could do that. I got hit on my 5200--nude carbon with the blue appointments, not grey--which is how I got my 5900, but I loved the looks of that 5200.|

|I'd agree with the above post - I have a 5500 OCLV 120 frame - plenty of folks in our club race 'em too. I've seen a few very aggressive accidents involving these frames - stuff like cars running over the actual frame - in this case (and in other lesser cases) the frames were COMPLETELY undamaged apart from cosmetically. So here is another reason why Trek OCLV's are one of the world's finest frames - indestructable, comfortable, sleek, light, lifetime warranty, well priced etc etc etc... |

|I always thought Ti was indestructible until this weekend. My Ti frame cracked - no wreck, crash, pothole, or anything..just what could be called a 'stress fracture'.
ANY frame can break.

|colnago bititan. This frame had a history of cracking at the bottom bracket. My frame never did that, it cracked at the top tube/seat tube weld.
A side note....I went to a LBS to look for a frame. I mentioned that I had a Ti bike crack. The owner told me he no longer sells Ti frame becuase of the problems. He told me that at least 75% of the Airborne frames he sold came back with cracks. Most of the cracks...get this...were at the toptube/seattube junction?? He told me this before I told him where my crack was. I'm buying an Aegis - lifetime warranty!

|My old bike (carbon frame) was left on top of my car and acidentally driven into the top of the garage door while trying to pull in. The car rack broke into pieces but amazingly- the frame and fork didn't break bend etc... try that with any other frame material and you'd have a broken frame.|| |
