We all want more! I'm trying to decide between HED Alps, Zipps, and Mavic Carbones; trouble is, can't get a straight answer from anyone, as no dealer has them all. Seems that there are lots of moving parts to this subject. Anybody got any experience or info?

I'd knock out the mavic carbones. 1) The zipp 404 is probably just as aero, without weighing as much. 2) i've never ridden a pair, but i hear they are very fragile ( a shot pebble will crack the rim) I'd go for the 404's also because of weight, (404=1283, alps=1540) listed on websites, I'd go for the 404's. Hope this helps, but get the wheels you're most comfortable on.

Zipp 404's, hands down. I've been riding the tubular version for 2 years now. They are very fast, and I've had zero problems with them. I race them on some of the worst roads in the south (Louisiana), and I love them. Road races, crits, time trials. Definitely a perfect all around racing wheelset. And FWIW, the carbones are just an aluminum rim with a carbon "skin" wrapped around it.

I've ridden the Carbones 6 years with no problems. They are tough reliable wheels, but not as light as some of the others. The rims are mostly aluminum with CF fairings. The hubs have excellent bearings. If your priorities are aerodynamics and reliability they're hard to beat. The low count flat spokes probably give them a slight aerodynamic advantage.
If your priority is light weight, then consider something else.

Don't be rediculous get the zipps or Hed. You will be disappointed with Mavic Carbones. I have owned the Mavic and Zipps. Go with Zipps. Mavic has no advanage at all. mavic are heavy and stiff, they create a rough ride compared tot he Zipps. I have a pair of Zipp 404 clinchers and a pair of Cane Creek tubulars which are zipp 404 rims with Cane Creek spokes and hubs. Get the Zipps, customer service is great and Mavic doesnt sell single wheels. 450 grams should be enough of an argumenty for the way zipps are H2O proof and MAvics hold water like the Titanic
