|Question about hood and bar set up||Gall|

I was wondering the norm for where to place the shift lever on the bar and how much the bar should be angled down.
I ve seen many people with the lever up pretty high on the bar and the bar end at level. I think LA is an example of this. Then I ve seen just the the opposite.
Before I unwrap my bars to try different positions I want to know if climbing and comfort is better with the levers up higher on the bar etc.

|I like my hoods high on the bar and the bar ends almost pointing toward the rear axle. I used to care about what people thought and then I decided comfort was more important.|

... this feels good to me... I have no difficulty in reaching the levers from most spots on the bar...

|All my bikes are set up the same way. This is my latest LOOK project. It started as a rain bike but has gotten more involved. I use Cinelli Giro bars/stems on all my bikes. I don't have a problem with reach.|

|Maybe I didn't explain it very well.
If you start with everything in the "rule of thumb" position, and then you simply move the brake hoods closer up and higher up on the bar, I think the lever reach is increased when riding the drops.
Secondly, if you again start with everything in the "rule of thumb" position, and then simply tilt the bars so the bottoms point toward the rear hub rather than being parallel to the ground, I think the reach to the drops is ever so slightly increased.
Probably not a huge issue, but something to think about if you are already a bit stretched out.

|... my bars are generally parallel to the ground... and I have no trouble reaching the levers under most conditions... course, along with my alienoid inseam and arm length... I've got finger length that makes me... popular (get ya mindz outta da gutta... I play the violin too).
One of these days, I might take the time to do a more detailed study... but for now... this works...

|I want the tops of the hoods comfortable for standing climbs and also like to cup my hands over the hoods as an altenate aero position relaxing the hands...back of the palm resting in the low spot. In the drops I want to have good control of the brakes. Always takes me a few times adjusting to get my perfect set-up. It is definitely whatever works best for you and your riding style.|

|Is it just the photo, or are there no "drops" on those bars? Every bar I've ever seen/used has a straight section on the drops large enough to put your entire hand around. Yours definitely look like a "two finger grip" situation.|

|Those are stock Eubios bars. The fact I have the top section level makes it like that. When I'm in the "drops" I'm holding on to the angled secton under the ergo's. It's very comfortable, i'm in the drops most of the time. Do people actualy use that last section of the bar?|

|Two part process for me:
1) Angle the bars so that you are most comfortable in the drops. Wrists must not bend too much; a great benefit as you can spend more time in an aero position in the drops. Clamp the bars now, you won't move them.
2) Place the hoods so that you have a comfortable position up top for climbing and recovering.
Done. Thus, all manner of positions can be attained, by looking at all of the different ones here in this thread.

|try loosening your bars and rotating them towards you a little. this will move your hoods up. get them to where you think you will like them and go for a ride (after retightening, of course)...you may find you liked them better where they were. this will allow you to try a couple different positions before "committing" to a rewrap.|

|I was uncomfortable with the bar ends parallel to the ground. I ride on the hoods about 85% of the time, and I felt like I had to curl my wrists over the top of the bar and down too much to reach them with the bar in this position.
I simply turned the bars up to where the bar ends are basically pointed at the rear hub, and it made all the differnce in the world. The hoods are comfortably in reach now, and I did not have to adjust the actual position of the brake levers on the bars.
It does seem to put me just slightly more stretched out in the drops, but actually I find this to be good since the only reason I typically go to the drops is to change up my riding position and stretch out a bit.

|I just had a bike built for me with Campy and one of the selling points is the Ergo Hoods for comfort. They built it with the bars at "flat" angle with the drops more or less parallel to the ground but I too felt like I had to turn my wrist too much to hold the grips. It started to hurt my hands after awhile. I just turned the bars up a bit and now the fit with my hands is fantastic, it does however mean that I have to "reach" just a little bit more to shift or brake but like TNSquared, I ride about 85% on the grips. I don't think I can change my shifters on these bars because they are kind of formed to put the shifters exactly where they are right now. Not sure the brand (Deda?)|| |
