Prison term in street race death

SACRAMENTO -- Bryan Purgason, whose Sunrise Boulevard street race resulted in the death of a 44-year-old bicyclist last April, was sentenced Friday to two years in prison.

Purgason, 21, and Stephen Graoutte, 27, were racing April 25, 2002, as they turned onto Folsom Boulevard, and one of them hit Thomas Burgess, a bicyclist who was crossing the street, officials said.

Graoutte was sentenced earlier this year to 12 months in the county jail.

Purgason, who had pleaded no contest on Dec. 12 to a single count of vehicular manslaughter, faced a stiffer sentence because he fled and because he already was on probation for driving under the influence and for another street-racing incident.
Only two years?!Matno

Racing cars on public streets is insane. They ought to be put in a high-security psych ward for the rest of their lives. Actually, it's just stupid, which, unfortunately isn't against the law unless you're endangering people, but street racing? Idiots. Almost as stupid as driving drunk (and probably related).

It was either the prosecution dropped the ball or the prisons are just that overwhelmed. 2 years for killing someone is rediculous especially in an act that endangers others and violates traffic laws to begin with. If it was on the salt flats that would be one thing.....I can tell you the woman who hit me is going to the cleaners

I read this news on another website and it made me sick. A completely senseless act that stole the life of an innocent man.

What we can do to change I don't know, but feel the sheer joy of your ride. Every inch is freedom and treat it like the ride is your last.

On Wednesday I run off the road by Teeenagers that decided it would be fun to play games with a cyclist. I was lucky to escape with no injuries--thank God for MTB skills.

They came back for round 2 and I have their plates--now the ball is on my court. I just wish I could believe that their parents will care.
find them...hurt them.IFTreedog

No matter what, just follow through. If their parents don't care, tell their teachers. If that doesn't work, stalk them at work. If they still don't get it, key their car, take a crap on the hood, do whatever it takes.
If only they had been carrying narcotics...IFTreedog

Then they would be facing a stiffer term.

You do realize that lawyers are trying to put the bad guys away (including those who hit cyclists), too, don't you? (BTW, I don't do criminal defense.)

More proof that nothing would be better for our country or our transportation culture than finally losing a Middle Eastern war and ending up with $5/gallon gasoline. Drivers are not people!
