I'll be at a conference next week at the Westin Galleria (near the Galleria Mall) in Houston. I will be without car but am thinking about bringing my roadbike. Are there any decent places to get in a 1-2 hour ride leaving from the Westin Galleria? Please let me know as I need to decide soon whether or not to bring the bike. Thanks.

If you don't mind riding in circles, there's a great loop at Memorial Park which is just a couple of miles from the Westin. The loop is paved and pretty wide. It's covered with trees so it's not as hot as riding on the street and it's fairly protected from wind. The loop has several turns and the distance is about 1.2 miles. The loop is shared with roller bladers, but you'll find 50, 100, or more cyclists there at peak time. Just went last night and put in a couple hours at 22 mph+. It's the same loop used for a weekly crit series that takes place over the summer (too bad it won't start in time for you). The park is on Memorial Drive just inside loop 610. It's basically a couple of exits north of where you'll be.

The Death Ride starts at the picnic loop on Tues/Thur 6 pm. There's also a ride out of Planetary Cycles which is about 5 miles from where you'll be - just more traffic to go through to get there.

If you bring the bike, get ready to sweat. It's already in the upper 80s/low 90s here and the humidity has been high. Winds have been brisk lately as well.

either Memorial Loop, or the Planetary Ride...Wed at 6pm, about 30 miles and they hammer...rode last night and it was great. Planetary cycles is about 4-5 miles from the Galleria...easy to get to by cab. It's at the corner of South Braeswood and Stella Link. See you there.
