Last year, some of you may remember that I had a goal of making my 11.6 mile lunchtime ride (rolling in spots, some traffic to deal with) at an average speed of 20.0 mph. I figured that I would have to be at least that fast to pull my local bike clubs "A" paceline for any worthwhile distance.

Last year, my best was 19.9 mph and I was very short of breath and nearly puked when I got off the bike. This year, I've hit 19.9 mph again but had a "finishing kick" left over and wasn't nearly as winded. Today, I *finally* managed 20.0 mph. Winded yes, but I recovered quickly. Had a finishing kick of around 23 mph.

...problem is I may regret going out hard today as I have a hill training ride later tonight...but, at least, I should be ready to try a (albiet flat) "A" ride.

btw never discount the value of going hard enough to puke.

That's especially good if you missed any lights along the way. It's amazing how slowing down for and accelerating away from a light can mess up your average speed. My town has too many lights.

Next goal: 21mph. :-)

Well done mate! It's a great feeling when you crack that target, next stop 25mph average, go for it.
