Need recs for a place to rent/ride in San Diegovindicator
May 6, 2003 8:02 AM
A friend of mine will be in San Diego over the weekend, staying downtown at the Hilton (the Harbor Inn or Harbor Suites or some such). He has his road pedals and shoes with him and he'd like to rent a bike and get a good ride in. Any recommendations for a place to rent or a good riding route (preferably one that starts and ends at the rental shop)?

Thanks,

Dave

I can't suggest a good rental place, but I know a few good routes in the north San Diego County area, as well as some good clubs to ride with, depending on his level.

The best rides from the downtown area typically go up the coast (PCH) towards Oceanside, then make a U-turn. Pretty flat, but incredible scenery. If you want hills, you'll have to head inland, but there's a plethora of those available.

One of my favourite loops (sorry, doesn't start downtown) is to go from the Del Mar area north on El Camino Real, east along San Dieguito Rd to Rancho Santa Fe, east along Del Dios Hwy (two lane hwy with a good shoulder), north through Escondido to Mission, then west on Mission/San Marcos Blvd/Palomar Airport Rd to the coast where you turn south again. about a 50 mile loop.

Most SD bike shops have a county map detailing bicycle routes and paths which might be helpful in planning a route.

Mt. Soledad isn't far from downtown, and it's a decent climb - especially the climb up the North side on Via Capri. It also provides a terrific view.

As far as rentals, about the only place I can think of in SD county that might rent a road bike is Nytro Sports on PCH in Encinitas. Downside is that it's about 25 miles from downtown. Better upside is that it's a great place to start a ride along the coast and back into the Rancho Santa Fe area. Enjoy the ride.
