|I'm one of the masses struggling with wheelset choices... You have been assembled here to rescue me from certain destruction. (Thanks in advance for any help!)
The VICTIM: A 5-10, 142 lb roller, rides at about a 91 cadence, averages about 18-21 mph for 50 miles on Saturdays
The BATTLEFIELD: Chicago's lakefront and surrounding 'plains'.
The ENEMY: Sneak E. Headwind, usually seen gusting south at 15-20 mph
I need your help to pick THE WEAPON: (Budget < $800)
I'm running Spinergy Xaeros that came stock on my aluminum Litespeed. I like the fact that they're plush, but I don't feel that the fat spokes are ideal for the windy conditions. I'll keep the Spinergies for training, and this wheelset will be for fast club rides and hopefully my first races this summer.
I've been looking at the Rolf Prima Vigors. I met Diettrich at an expo and was able to check them out close up - Love the workmanship on the hubs. My only concern would be what happens to a sub-150 rider on a 34mm rim in a monster crosswind?
Should I even be looking at a deep rim (the Am Classic 420 is also in my sights, or used Zipp 404s) or would I be better served with the classic Open Pro/DA combo or the Velomax Ascent II?
Climbing isn't much of a factor here, so conquering the headwinds is the goal of the mission. Good luck, and if you fail, I will disavow any knowledge of your existence.

They are built with Alex rims, rolled 4mm(!) too big!

|AM Classic 420's - light, stiff, and very aero. I ride open pro, Ksyriums, and cxp33's and the 420's are my favorites.|

|...and you can keep half of your wheelset budget money in your pocket, too! I ride Open Pros in Chicago and have been more than impressed by the durability and ride quality. Not the lightest wheelset and certainly lacking the 'bling-bling' of AmClassics or Zipps, but hey, the point here is to be fast, not look fast.|

|... the AMClassic wheels offer standard spokes making ownership a heck of a lot easier. If a spoke breaks, you can replace it with a DT equivalent (or whatever they use).
You claim you're a little nervous about crosswinds and the 420s, what about the 350s? You can get them "up"-built for a little more durability, and they aren't the high-profile aero rim that will cause pain in the crosswinds.
All of the wheels menioned are great and don't think you'd be disappointed with any of them. I even think the DA/Open Pro is a good choice, but I'd go for the 350s if I was you.

|The victim profile matches very closely... less a couple of pounds and plus a couple of rpm's. The battlefield is somewhat similar since I ride the plains and mountains of Colorado. As for the enemy, Mr. Headwind is only half of the opposition, with Mr. Gravity his evil twin brother.
My weapon of choice last year was a pair of Campy Neutron's. (I am a little leery of aero rims given my light weight... I have had some hairy experiences with crosswinds on mountain passes.) Anyway, the Campy's are comfortable and strong. No truing necessary in 6,000 miles.
This year I got a great deal on some Ksyrium SL's. With 1,200 miles so far they seem to be a little stiffer and just as comfortable. And the stiffness seems to help for climbs and sprints.
For what it's worth, I have Open Pros on my fixed gear, and they have been indestructible. Just a little heavy for the weekend slugfests.

|Deep-dish rims are difficult to maintain course in dynamic velocity perpendicular winds. May I suggest, shallow tubular rims, 28 or 32 drillings, 15 or 16g spokes and good tubular tyres. Pressure them to 600-650kpa. You'll get a nice plush ride but with very low rolling resistance and almost no pinch flats.|
