My gf is thinking about getting her first road bike...she'd probably be doing 1-2 hour road rides. We're thinking under $1000 or so (suggestions welcome, maybe something like a fuji roubaix?) but mainly she needs to be fitted.

What is a good shop with experienced fit experts around the bay area?

Even though I live in Florida....I have spent my fair share snooping Bay area shops. If I was in the market for an honest reliable fitter I would chose from:
Tony at the Bicycle Odyssey in Sausalito
Mike J at Chain Reaction in Redwood City
Len Luke at the Bike Nook in S.F.

You won't go wrong with any of them....BUT...Be up front and offer to pay for the fit and tell them you will be going somewhere else to purchase a bike!
I wouldn't be surprised if they told you to take a hike but I know these three to be professional ( they will tell you nicely)
another BUT.... see what they have to offer, you may be pleasantly surprised. And unless you do you own work she will need a good shop to look after her.
Take a day trip and treat her to a day in the city exploring the shops.

The employees at that shop are snobs and rude. Gucci employees are a lot friendlier to a bum than the CC personnal will ever be.

Bicycle Odessy is awesome. I rode in last week and asked about setting an appointment for having my pedals adjusted and they did an evaluation on the spot for free, and not only for my pedals, but for my whole bike fit.
Yep! C.C. not for wankers to be sure! nmDUOHEAD

Yeah, I always hated City Cycle when I lived in SF. I went there from time to time to check out the eye candy, but they were consistently rude and dismissive. They also totally mis-applied a set of replacement decals on my Serotta ATi, which I found a little hard to understand, given that they have an entire shop full of Serottas to use as go-bys.
