Buttons, Hood?stinkfoot247

I was reading review on Dura ace shifter and said something about the hoods. What is a hood. And, I just noticed after a year that I have buttons on my right ultegra shifter. What are these for, and if for computer as I'm guessing what computer are they compatible with. Or am I mistaken and somehow ended up with a Dura- ace shifter. Thanks.

The hood are the rubber part you rest your hands on. The buttons are for Shimano's Flight Deck computer. Flight Deck works with Ultegra and Dura Ace so it's doubtful you have a Dura Ace shifter.

Some shifters have two buttons on the right shifter. Newer ones have one on each shifter. When you start talking about Flight Deck compatibility, you enter a confusing world... Some shifters work with the FD computer and have full functionality. Others allow you to use the buttons, but don't read your gears. My guess is that you have the (slightly) older Ultegra model which will allow you to use Flight Deck with both buttons on the right side. If you peel back the rubber hood (carefully) you'll see a flat panel with 2 screws that can be removed. Should be one on both sides.

In case you're interested in adding a Flight Deck computer to your bike, I've got a harness that would fit a 2-button-on-the-right setup. It also has a sensor that goes to the left shifter (with no buttons) so you would have to make sure your shifters have the right compatibility. I believe this harness should fit a 6501 Ultegra shifter. (As opposed to the newer 6510). Also, the sensor that goes around the fork was cut off by an LBS so it will only work if you don't have an oversized fork (i.e. it will probably only fit a steel fork). If you're interested, I'll sell it for $15 shipped. It also includes the spoke magnet. Check your email...
