Does anyone use the Bowflex or the new Crossbow? Any other opinions or advice about exercise equipment?

I know a guy who has a Bowflex. He said it works o.k. although he thinks working out with free weights works just as well, if not better. I have a Concept 2 rowing machine that I used for eight years but I stopped using it when I came back to cycling. Working out indoors is just too boring for me. I live in NorCal and can ride just about all year long and the rain is the only thing that stops me. I look at rain as unanticipated rest. But I'm thinking about going back to lifting weights a couple of days a week due to muscle inbalance that has developed from just cycling. I think free weights are the way to go if you have the room. You can scarf around and buy used weights and build a nice home gym over a period of time...

This probably isn't the advice you wanted, but mine is to join a gym vice buying home equipment. Its easier to stay motivated when you are working out with other people. Plus the gym will have a variety of equipment including cardio, machines and free weights to allow some diversity to keep from getting bored. If you use the equipment at home religiously then you can argue that its cheaper over the long haul. However, if you lose interest and it gathers dust then you aren't saving any money.

Continuing years of strength training, I've simplified my equipment to the following: Body Solid bench WFID-30, York Chin/Dip #540717, a few pairs of DB's, and a barbell/plates. Combine with Pilates and some ab work and the sky is the limit. As Dino stated, used weights are everywhere, watch your local paper. The rest is up to you.

I would second the idea of the concept2 rowing ergometer... It is excellent and effecient for calorie loss, aerobic capacity, V02 max training, and leg strength.

As a Bowflex owner I would suggest joining a gym. The variety of equipment make a better workout and aid in motivation. Plus working out by yourself gets boring.
Another vote for dumbells and a bench, or join gym, or bothContinental

I've maintained good strength for many years, and variety is one key to long term succes. How long do you really think you'll keep using a Bowflex 2-3 times per week? Weights and a bench give lots of variety at very little cost. Gyms give you access to the best equipment and instruction.
