|Tues. and Thus. the big dogs come out to train at the Rose Bowl. These two photos show the second lap around. At the tail end of the group there was a accident. Like all accidents, it happened quickly. I turned my head left, a split second later I turn my head right, and I see bikes and riders all over the asphalt. Only one rider stayed down, and hopefully his injuries won't be too bad. A lap around the Rose Bowl is a little more than 3mi, and it took the group 7 minutes to make it around. Seeing that rider down put a knot in my stomach. I got a taste of asphalt this weekend, and I was going much much slower...|

|Well-organized training rides used to (and perhaps still do) run out of El Dorado Park in Long Beach on Tuesday evenings. The ride almost always turned out a strong group of racers and those looking to improve their skills. Although I've never turned out for the Rose Bowl training ride, I've heard horror stories of some pretty nasty crashes.|

|Just guessing but seems like somewhere near 75 riders show up. Wide range of skill/fitness levels. Some riders are old hands whereas others are pretty green. Some guy went down hard on Tuesday and someone called 911. The pack just slowed down a little, since the fire truck was blocking the lane somewhat, and started to hammer again once clear.
Fun in a brutal sort of way.

I was planning on starting there when the next series starts, but I just do not have enough miles underneath me. It's been a good lesson for what not to do next winter.

|there is a Thrusday night race at Fiesta Island in San Diego that attracts a similar crowd. Ten laps of 2.3 miles in about 50 min. I haven't done it a while (not that I can keep up for the ten laps) but last two weeks I've driven by around 5:45 and I see a lot of racers headed to the ride.|| |
