|Tire Tubes - is lightweight stupid light?||Fez|

|I was shopping for 700C road tubes last night. Looked at Performance Lunar Light and Michelin Svc Course tubes, among others.
These tubes appear SUBSTANTIALLY thinner than the standard issue IRC tubes that came on my bike and lasted me 3 years with no flats.
Are tubes getting too thin to the point where puncture resistance and air retention is compromised?
I don't mind an extra 25 grams on each rim if it means the difference between a flat or not.

|I did the "stupid light" routine for a few years, probably consuming well over a hundred 48 gram LUnar Lights. Yes, they are light, and will probably work fine. But, you certainly do get more flats, and some of the tubes, maybe 10%, come out of the box with problems. Probably another 10% will puncture as you try to mount them, no matter how careful you are, if you have a tight tire/rim combination. The slightest pinch will pierce them.
For racing events on clean roads where lightness is important, use Lunar Lights with Supersonics or Veloflex sub=150 gram tires. Forget them for everything else, as the odds of problems are much greater than even the 70-80 gram tubes.

|How have you fared with Michelin Service Course (a little heavier) and Continental 700C Race (a little more heavy)?
Are both of these reliable? Would go with Open Pros and GP3000 tires.

|The Lunar Lights are for racing only. The Michelin Service Course are fine for everything.|

|Agree with the Michelin recommendation. They get more flats than thicker tubes but are reasonably durable.
One nice thing about the Michelin's is that they have a unthreaded smooth valve stem. This is important when using pump with a push on valve - the valve can rip the stem out of the tube when removing after filling.
My only beef with the Michelins is the cost. $5/tube is a rip in my opinion.

|I've been lured by sale prices on "comparable" tubes, but I always go back to the Michelins. They seem to have found the demarcation between light weight and failure prone, and they stay on the right side of it. Plus, the non-threaded valve stem makes for a longer life on the pump head and a better pumping seal (more accurate pressure guage readings).|

|I find light weight tubes are fine on the rim, but puncture very easily in my seat bag. As another poster noted they can be difficult to mount without tearing. Not the qualities I want in my spares!|

|I've had better luck with my super-light (I don't know exactly how light) AirB latex tubes than with the various 70-80 gram Specialized/Michelin tubes I've tried.|| |
