Good LBS in central Jersey?(10 posts)

Good LBS in central Jersey?BergMann

I live in Hunterdon County (Flemington), and am looking for a good shop within a 45 minute radius (this includes anywhere off of route 78, or down route 95 between New Brunswick and Trenton, and parts of eastern PA -- I'll do Philly in a pinch.)

I'm in the market for new shoes, and want to try before I buy (sick of the mail-order shuffle).
Most of the Mercer & Hunterdon county shops I've been in only stock Specialized, Diadora & Nike - none of which fit me.

I'm looking for a shop that has a good size run of Sidis (Genius narrow), Vittorias, or anything else on the narrower end of the spectrum.

Any tips?
Although I grew up in NJ, I have no clear idea where Flemingbill

is, so bear with me.
High-Gear Cyclery in Stirling is a very cool place. It's not too far off of Rte 22 and/or 78 (although I confess I'm not sure about the 78 part). Surrounding towns include Morristown, Gillete, Berkeley Heights, Mendham -- this ringing any bells?

Halter's Cycles in South Brunswick carries Sidi.

Knapps Cycle Shop in Trenton does also.
There is one in Flemington!merckxman

Pete's Bike & Fitness Shoppe, 105 Route 31, tel 782.5935. Very neat shop, in biz since 1973.

Also close by in Frenchtown, Freeman's Bicycle Shop, 996-7712; they are at 52 Bridge Street.

The Sports People in Far Hills on Rt 202(close to Rt 287/78) definitely carry Sidi's. 234-1410
Nice people, wrong shoes...BergMann

Yup, I know the folks at Pete's well. They only carry the shoes I listed in my first post. Can't wear 'em. Been to Freeman's too. They don't have much high-end gear.

Thanks for the Far Hills tip. I'll try it.
(My problem has been that most people stock the standard widths, not the narrows)
FYI: Freeman's doesn't carry shoes!BergMann

The guy at Freeman's just informed me that they won't be selling shoes any more, and are closing out their remainders.
It's a real problem around here -- I would love to support the LBS folks for stuff like shoes, where hands-on fitting experience is essential.
The catch is it's usually not worth my time to pay them a visit. Seems like the core market around here is hybrids for tow-path use, not high-end performance gear.

Thanks again for taking the time to include phone numbers and all though!

Kopp's Cycle Shop • Princeton, NJ • 609-924-1052
Reportedly the oldest in the Nation.
Once again - nice folks, thin merchandise... nmBergMann

Try High Gear in Stirling. Just off exit 36 on Rt. 78. Good collection of Sidi's.

Milburn Bicycle usually has a large selection of Sidi's.

Somerset Cyclery (in Somerville across from the Court House) carries Sidi and I think Vittorias and Carnac's, but they don't carry a large inventory.
