Puerto Rico ride report(11 posts)

Puerto Rico ride reportDave Hickey

Let me start by apologizing for not have many ride pictures. This Texas boy was not use to climbing. If you ride in southwest Puerto Rico, be prepared to climb. Our base was in a little fishing village call La Paguera. The southwestern coast has a very sparse population so it's perfect for riding. The roads are narrow but in beautiful shape. After work on Friday we rode for 50 miles. The people I rode with are hardcore triatheletes and really like to hammer. The ages varied from 42 to 64 years old. It was one of the best workouts I've has in years. After a dinner of fresh shrimp and wine, I passed out. We woke up on Saturday morning and went for a 1½-mile ocean swim. Right after our swim, we hopped on our bikes and did another 40 miles of riding. After lunch, I went for an easy 10-mile ride just so I could say I rode 100 miles. This was one of the best "business" trips I've ever had.

The white line toward the top was a road we'd just climbed. This ia a shot from across the bay.

This house was right on the ocean hidden in the mangroves. It's owned by a couple that do nothing but compete in triathalons. Notice the nice outdoor work area. All of their bikes are carbon because of the humidity and salt water.

The southwestern coast doesn't get much rain. There were a lot of cactus. It almost looked like parts of Arizona(without the ocean).

Was it you I spoke to a few months ago? Did you get to go to the north part of the island? Did you climb El Yunque?
