|Carbon seat stays on titanium frame necessary?||jbonny|

|I've been debating whether to upgrade my frame to carbon fiber or titanium, and realized I could actually incorporate both into the frame. I'm looking specifically at the DEAN El Diente CTi titanium frame with carbon fiber seat stays. I weigh 175 and I've never ridden titanium before, but I know that it is very smooth and forgiving on rough roads, allowing for much more comfort on long rides than my current 7005 aluminum frame.
I'm wondering if significant improvement in comfort and damping of road shock would be seen with adding carbon fiber seat stays over a full titanium rear triangle.??? And does the curved tubing seat stay design (Litespeed) add significant plushness in comparison with straight seat stays in a ti frame? It would cost me a good $300 more to add the carbon fiber seat stays. Even though comfort is very important to me on rough gravel sealed country roads I am constantly riding, I don't know if it's worth the extra cost.

|I have CF seatstays on Ti frame and can't say they make ride much better. They do make rear triangle stiffer.|

|I have a Colnago CT-1 with carbon B-stays. I just raced the Hillsboro-Roubaix this past weekend in Illinios. The course had gravel, potholes, eroded/decayed country roads and of course brick. There is a down hill section of brick that I hit 41 MPH on. My frame ate it up and the ride was amazingly smooth and compliant. I have only riden steel in the past on this type of course and it beat me to hell. On the Ti/carbon bike I had absolutely no harsh feedback. I think you really can't appreciate the carbon rear until you get the bike on this type of course then it really shines.
My teammate rode a Colnago Ovalmaster, which is a complete Ti frame. He said the brick course just about beat the hell out of him. I think that the comparison is pretty significant since both bikes are essentially the same except for the carbon seat and chain stays.

|I agree that the CT1 is a very comfortable bike, but I'm not sure about the A/B comparison with your friend's Ovalmaster. Having seen a couple of Ovalmasters (and having spent considerable time on a CT1) I have to ask whether you're sure about the "essentially the same" bit. Certainly the literature on the Ovalmaster suggests a stouter build than the CT1 and--at least eyeballing them--I'd say the main triangles looked pretty different to me. I cannot give you the cross sections of the different tubes off the top of my head, but I've got a pretty clear recollection that at least the downtube on an Ovalmaster is pretty darn big (then there's that "master profile" top tube). I thought the general line--and Colnago's line--on the Ovalmaster was that it was designed specifically for larger riders. If that's right, it's not a very good test case for the difference that a CF rear triangle makes. Add to this the fact that we have the subjective impressions of different riders employing perhaps different wheels/tires/tire pressure . . . you get the drift.
Again, I'm inclined to agree with your general take on the CT1, but how much of this is the specific design of that specific bike, and how much has to do with the simple fact of CF stays is really not clear to me.

|...and can say that the Deal El Diente CTI it is a very nice combo. Whether the carbon/ti mix is "necessary" is a personal call. You would have to ride carbon/no carbon versions of the frame back to back to see if you have a preference.
I plopped my $$ down for the carbon stays to stiffen it up - I go about 190 lbs. and generate a lot of torque - not to tune out road noise. It's stiff, but also very comfortable. My ti Dean with the carbon stays does a nice job tuning out road surfaces that would buzz the heck out of my Cannondale.
Talk with John at Dean Bikes and let him know what your questions are. He's a good guy, and will steer you in the right direction.

|I have a Dean El Diente with just the regular ti stays and the ride is not as comfortable as I'd like it to be. Nothing like aluminum, but harsher than the serotta i had been riding. Compared to other ti frames, the El Diente has a real beafy tubeset, including the chain/seat stays, so the ride is likely harsher than say a Litespeed classic. But on the plus side, it is very resonsive.
If i was gonna get the Dean again, I'd get the El Diente w/ carbon stays. Any other brand, I'd probably stick w/ the plain ti stays, since the average ti tubeset is not as oversized/beefy.
