Which Gear Combos Should be Avoided 39-53.....12-25BaadDawg

I have a new double Ultegra as stated above the front is 39-53 and the rear is 12-25.

Which gear combos should not be used. I get chain rub in 39-14 so I dont use it or the other 2 lower rear cogs when I am in the 39. Seems to run ok in 53-21 havent really tried 53-23.

Should I get my gears adjusted so as to not rub in 39-14?

I am also getting rub in 53-12. The bike has only had 3 rides on it so it will be going back for adjustments at some point.

I use Campy Record 10 speed w/ 39/52 and 12/25 rear. I am able to use every gear combo without any rubbing at all including 52/25.

Sounds like you need some adjustments.

what about extreme angles (i.e big/big or small/small) and wear and tear?

I haven't noticed any ill effects. I will sometimes use the 52/23 or 25 combo while standing and powering up a short hill. I have about 4000 miles on the cassette and 2000 on the chain (I changed it at 2000) and I have no wear problems at all. Believe it or not, I use the all Ti cassette too.

Campy was going to be my 1st choice (triple Centaur) since I was looking at a custom steel bike.

I changed my mind and went with a Giant TCR1 Composite that comes with double Ultegra. I am thrilled with the bike, but need to get these gearing issues sorted out and adjusted.

LBS really loves it when you tell them someone online says that the LBS advice is wrong. In fact they get pissed. Many times the online guys are in fact right, but the LBS seems pretty touchy if you question their wisedom. Plus they are busy and want to get rid of you and not spend too long on a bike which is already sold and paid for.
..don't pick on the Shimano guys like that ;-) nmSpunout

" am also getting rub in 53-12" Clearly this indicates a need for adjustment! No comment on the others, though the situation seems a little extreme. I *have* heard that setup for the Giants can be finicky due to the very short chain stays, so chain rub in big-big and small-small wouldn't surprise me.

This image is actually from the shimano website... It seems like they could get this right.
