Got my new TCR1 Composite yesterday, and the only thing that doesn't seem perfect is the front braking action.

When I apply the front brake it suhdders like a car with a warp in the rotor. It also makes a noise like rubber on rubber.

My son looked at it (he's a mountain bike rider and not a mechanic) and said one side of the brake was contacting the rim before the other and was bending the rim just before dual contact.

I went today (before he looked at it) to my LBS and they adjusted the front brake and it didn't change anything so I went back and another mechanic looked at at it and rode it a bit, and said that it might just be the rim needing some rubber on it. He said the Mavics are very true surfaces, but because of the spoke pattern you sometimes get 1 spot thats more raised than anywhere else. There is a slight click on this spot.

The wheels are Mavic Cosmos. The rear seems fine. He said to ride it for awhile and use the front brake as much as possible and it should go away.

Who should I believe? My son (a non mechanic) or my LBS?

Put on a different front wheel and see if that fixes it. Like many (hopefully) small problems with bikes you just have to isolate the cause. What your son is describing is just an uncentered brake caliper--I'm assuming the mechanic fixed that.

btw, I'd recommend getting the Zinn book on bike repair. It should cover some of this kind of stuff and save you some trips to the LBS. Good luck!

No the uneven contact is occuring after going to the LBS and having them adjusting everything. It's not uneven, but one pad is hitting the rim before the other.

The pads should be hitting at about the same time, but still that shouldn't cause the shuddering you describe. I'd try another wheel first, then look into the hs adjustment, the fork, etc. Do you have any other 700c wheels around you can try?

If it isn't the brakes or rim, check to see whether headset is loose. Applying the front brakes on a bike with a slightly loose headset can cause a shudder. If the bike is new, there's a chance the headset wasn't properly adjusted in the first place.

Spoiler is correct, the only times I ever had a shudder in the front was when I had a looose headset. You can check it yourself. Put some weight on the bike, lean on it, clamp the fron brake down and rock the bike forward and back. You will either feel movement or feel it and hear it depending on how loose it is.
Loose headset or dirty rims/padsKerry

Check your headset as Spoiler suggests. Also consider cleaning the rims (soap & water, rinse, wipe dry) and giving the brake pads a light sanding. Sometimes things are gummy right out of the box.
