Bar tape question...MVN
Apr 8, 2003 3:01 PM
I recently re-taped my bars and I was wondering how far from the stem the end of the tape should be. I've read that it should be about 2 inches. Is that right, or is it personal preference? Right now mine is about 1 1/2 inches from the stem. Also, I'm having trouble getting the electrical tape to stick. It has come undone 3 times. The first time was when I re-taped the bars with red tape. I didn't like the look so I changed it back to black a few weeks later. With the black it has come undone twice. And this is with a new roll of tape. I think I may be doing something wrong. Any advice or suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

How far out to end the tape is a combination of personal preference, the resulting degree of bend in your cables, and whether you want/need to leave space for a computer mount, clip on bars, etc. If your electrical tape is not sticking, you probably had dirty/sweaty/soapy/hand creamy hands. Wash your hands before taping the bars, and put on new electrical tape.
My hands were clean both times and the tape was new (nm)MVN

When you start the final wrap of the electrical tape, ease up on the tension. Gently lay down the last inch of tape without any tension whatsoever.

If you stretch the tape for the entire length of the wrap, the tension you're putting into the last inch will slowly but surely undo your work.

Where your bar tape ends from the stem depends on a couple of things- the width of your bars, shape, and how much tape you have left when you get to that point. It also depends on where you place your hands. I measure out from the stem on both sides so they are equal and place a temporary small piece of electrical tape as a mark. Not all bar tapes are equal in length either, so I stick to using the same brand so I have an idea of how much to overlap. On the electrical tape- I always apply the electrical tape in the same direction as the bar tape and end it underneath the bars in a place my hands don't touch when I ride. Sometimes the electrical tape will start to unstick and I just press down with my fingers and roll in the tape direction until it stays in place. Not all electrical tape is equal either. Buy quality tape. The electrial tape has a little stretch factor so you have to apply it a little tight. I only use black bar tape as any other color I try gets dirty fast...
Thanks guys, very helpful (nm)MVN
