Some mechanical help, please?
Hi guys,
I think I have a loose headset. Holding the handlebar and applying the front brake, I have back and forward movement in the head tube. Stem bolt is tight. Looks like there's a couple of things that could be tightened on the headset. What do I tighten and with what tool? This is a one-inch threaded headset.
thanks!
Headset wrenches (or just one and a crescent wrench)...Spunout

Top nut is the locknut, next one down presses the cones into the bearings. Tighten until play disappears, make sure the headset doesn't bind. If you lift the bike up from the top-tube and lean it side-to-side, the front should swivel freely.

If this is an older bike, best to replace the bearings. Simple job while you have the tools out.

using two wrenches i find that if i adjust the bottom cup ever so slighlty tight and then holding the top nut steady, back the bottom cup up against it snug i end up with a solid lock on the proper adjustment,..this atkes some finess but has proved a good technique for me..
