|12in/lb = 1ft/lb. 60in/lb = 5ft/lb. So to find ft/lb of torque, divide in/lb by 12.|

|No way to know (accurately) without a torque wrench.
That said, I never use a torque wrench except on parts that require high levels of torque, like bottom brackets and cassette lockrings. The rest are done by feel, from experience.
60 inch pounds is the same as 5 foot-pounds. It's the torque that would be applied by a weight of ten pounds hung from a 6 inch long wrench or twenty pounds applied to the end of a 3 inch wrench. It's not very much.
You can easily generate 3-4 times this torque with a short hex wrench if you twist as hard as you can.

|The torque specs on the lockring is 50Nm or 37 ft. lbs, which is darn tight.
I guess if you don't mind your cogs coming loose in the middle of a ride, you don't need to tighten much. A loose lockring can also allow the cogs to move on the cassette body and cause premature wear.
With proper maintenance technique, cassette and chain removal should only be required annually or every 3-4000 miles.

|A loose cassette sucks. I undertorqued mine once (I actually thought it was pretty tight) and it came loose 1200 miles from home. It was a real pain when the shifters starting shifting on their own and I had to drive 20 miles to the nearest LBS since I didn't have my cassette tool with me. Incidentally, I bought $20 worth of stuff from them, thinking that maybe they'd tighten the lockring for free. Nope. Not only did they charge me $3, but they waited 45 minutes to do it! (I was the only customer in the shop!) How long did they think it would take that they couldn't stop assembling the bike they were working on (3 of them no less!) to twist a wrench?!
At any rate, my cassettes are now nice and snug. There's no point in worrying about how easy they are to remove since that only happens about once every 2 years.

|We had another poster this week indicate they had stripped out handlebar clamp bolt hole. I was extremely surprised at how little torque was recommended for my Thompson stem bolts.|
