supposedly stronger but heavier than open pros or ma3 rims. i've had a set of 33s/105 hubs and the next set i purchase (in the kit) will be 33s with ultegra or DA. you've got 45 pounds on me, fwiw.

According to Mavic's website, the CXP33 and the MA3 weigh exactly the same - 470g. Kind of makes me wish I had gone with the CXP's, but my MA3's work fine and make a decent all around wheel. Too bad they don't look as cool as the CXP's...

I think CXP-33's make a great wheel. One thing I would advise is to use brass nipples. I think it is a good idea on all general purpose wheels and especially at your weight.

I agree with GregJ. I love my CXP-33 rims (have built up four pairs of them lately). With brass nipples, and 32 spokes DT14/15 they are darn near bullet proof. I'm currently riding a set laced to DA hubs. If you use ultegra hubs I'd check to see if your wheelbuilder uses spoke washers or not - might be an issue if yr using DT 14/15 or 14/17 spokes.

At 6'7" and 270#, I am running CXP33's with Ultegra Hubs. The front is 32H with Straight 15 Spokes. Haven't had any issues with it at all since I got it (5,000 miles).

Had 32H on the rear (same spokes) and I think I got a crap build since one side was detensioning like a mother. Got a 36H from Colorado Cyclist and it has been solid for the better part of those miles.

I am pretty hard on wheels and these definilty get a thumbs up.

I have thought about talking to Dave at SpeedDream about a set of his wheels for a guy my size but I am not sure about the $$$, but I hear they are super nice.

For the money, I don't think you can go wrong with the CXP33 and Ultegra, In fact, regardless of money I think it is the right choice for guys our size.

I'm 6'4" and between 250 and 215 (depends on early season vs. late season). I smashed up CXP rims by hitting a 3/4" stick and flattened the circumference of the rim; instant trash. Open Pro's were OK, but I kept shredding spokes. Went to Velocity arrowheads; GREAT rim!! Never had a problem in 2 seasons. On the MTB with Velocity, I had 4 busted spokes before I noticed an out of true by 2mm wobble. Tough as nails. Not exactly light, but strong and cheap. Bought both wheels on Ultegra hubs from Colorado for $205 Can't say enough good about these as training and recreational wheels.
