Best stuff for New Brooks saddle-Proofide or other?MXL02

I just got a new Brooks B-17 for my commuter, and I was going to just use some leather conditioner I have laying around the house, but the Brooks literature made such a big deal about the Proofide that I am concerned I might mess it up if I use something else. Anybody have any thoughts or suggestions?

I have a Brooks Pro that's at least 20 years old, plus two newer B-17s. The Pro has had a lot of use, and I weigh 225-240 depending on motivation. I don't KNOW that Proofide is better than anything else out there, but I figured why not use the stuff from the guys who made the saddle? The glaze has worn off, but otherwise it doesn't look or feel much different than it did when it got broken in.
The Rivendell Web site has some details on this, BTW. One key seems to be to take it easy with whatever you use. Grant P. says one or two applications a year is plenty, and that's what I've done.

i've had it out in rain and snow and sleet and hail and ice and mud and up hills down 'em and carried it on my back on p!ssing rain cyclocross races and spent lots of hours on it, and aside from slight break-in, it looks new (saddle is 8 months old). the best protection you can give that saddle is a set of fenders and your rear end. :)

Clamp the saddle in a machinist vice. Have Bonzo do his thing on the saddle. Then beat the piss out of the saddle with the bat for 30 minutes. If the saddle is still uncomfortable, take the bat and beat the piss out of the monkey.
