To my fellow cyclits. I am under great pain having spent the last 5 1/2 days in the hospitol recovering from major surgery due to being driven into by a car. I had just received my new pair of American classics and was at the end of my second ride with them. I am on eavy drugs right now and can not give all detail. But, the woman was cited for failing to yield resulting in personal injury and carel;ess and reckless driving. After I did a summersalt over her hood and rolled about 15 feet the driver refused to call 911 and never got out of her car at anytime to help me. A gentlmen who saw the whole thing ran over to me and called 911.I received 3 fracture two are broken. I am not allowed on my bike, which is detroyed completly, for at least 6 months. I will be away from the board for awhile since its hard enogh just to get to the bathroom. I am in great pain but my teammates really came through for meand have displayed such class, concern and care. Anyway, becareful out there my friends and best wishes
Sad news. Hope you recover quickly and completely. (nm)js5280

Rest, my friend, as I know that you are hurting all over. I can sympathize with you as I was injured in 1999 ( non-cycling accident) with a broken foot, and several sprains and severe bruises. Off the bike for 3 months, the will to come back stronger has actually made me a better rider, I think. Never mind the bike...it can be replaced with a lighter and faster one. Just rest & rehab for now...you will get very impatient and even angry with your inactivity, but occupy your time with the VeloNews Buyers Guide and decide which frame and gruppo you most desire. Also, contact a good attorney, and say to him/her as I did
"I don't want to get rich here, but I think deserve considerable compensation for my pain & suffering". In the end, their insurance co. did indeed compensate me, and I walked away satisfied (with a new high-end rig) and finally
started to forget about the horrific events that got me to
that small, but friendly, hospital in Pa. BE PATIENT...time
will heal most wounds. Good luck, get well, keep us posted.
Yeah, what he said...Ahimsa

Like the other poster, I could rip that woman's throat out for not calling 911, not getting out of the car to help you!! What is your phone#...we gotta talk! Email me.

Keep that chin up! Positive things come out of events like this! You are only going to get better from here!! Be happy surgery is behind you and you are "on the mend"!!

Really, really sorry to hear that. Last September I was inches from being just like you or worse. Someone in the opposite direction was making a left turn in front of me and stopped to let me pass and the car behind them (hidden to me as I was to them) decided to pull a fast one and cut in behind the car that was stopped to let me through and gunned it right into me as I was at full speed getting through the intersection. Only a miracle and a crazy diagonal swerve by me so that he zipped behind me without even touching his breaks prevented what hapened to you or worse.

Didn't ride all that much after that last fall.

Best of luck. You will be in less pain in a few days from now. The first 48 hours are the worst.

Take care
Ah man!! I'm so sorry!! I hope you get well soon! (nm)Rich_Racer

As a past cycling accident victim I have an idea what you are going through. I echo the others sentiments. Be patient, get a good lawyer, and get a good physical therapist. Additionally, when you are well enough to do therapy, ask the therapist for any additional exercises/stretches you can do at the gym or at home. That worked wonders for me.
Hang in there, bro', it'll all be behind you before you know it, 'til then there's CNN (or news source of your choice), books, magazines, crossword puzzles, anything to keep your mind occupied.
Oh, and get the attorney soon, these things get very drawn out when insurance companies are involved.

I hope the pain lets up soon and you are back on your bike quickly. Seek legal advice!

I hate to read and hear of things like this because it brings to light, in my mind anyway, the reality of how dangerous cycling in an automotive domain can be. I think in some cases if the cyclist hit had been a 30 ton rock in the road, the car driver would have no problem stopping and waiting until it is clear to pass or make the turn; because they know hitting the boulder will damage their car. But stick a guy, or gal, on a bike out there and the driver gets stupid. Almost seems they place more value on their auto than on human life.

Healing does happen, but it's a long road for some of us.

Glad you're here to tell us about it.

Try to put all your energy into healing, she'll get the karma she deserves.

Now frest dammit! :-)

Carbon 110, I can sympathize with your pain. I'm just recovering from an accident where I broke both scapulas and fractured my C6. I had a fusion for the neck which has healed and the shoulders are healing without surgery.I was out riding ten weeks after my accident. Stay on the Percosets, don't try to be a hero. You'll heal faster if you're not in pain. And be vigilant about the physical therapy. when I started I could barely walk, but I bounced back quickly, as you will, due to the fact that you were in great shape and your body will want to heal.
Hang in there. Here's hoping we see you at the GMSR,this August.

Good Luck, Bob

As bad as it is, it could always be worse. It is certainly good you have no head injury. Be strong and best wishes.

Here's to a speedy recovery.

I got hit by a car in similar circumstances a while back. I scribbled this scrap of nonsense after my accident -- hope that it helps at least a little bit.

thanks for sharing.

There are so many good messages in there, it should be in the FAQ section of the board under "How to behave & what to notice when in an accident".

Glad you survived.

Hopefully the woman who hit you was in shock and thus unable to help you, otherwise she deserves to be punished. Just get back on your feet soon, so you'll be able to stay involved in a sport you obviously love, maybe just not on the bike.
Very sorry to hear it--best wishes for a full recovery. (nm)djg

I am really sorry this happened. I wish you good karma and a good lawyer. I got hit-and-run by a drunk several years ago and I well know the anger this kind of thing can perpetrate upon your fellow (wo)man.

If you get tired of contemplating the ceiling tiles, email me: beth@chinkes.com

Oh, and read the message on Gregory Taylor's link - it'll sure make you smile!
