riding hard at night keeps me awakeishmael

I really like to ride late at night (less traffic and everything that comes with it and less glareing sun)but afterwards I sleep poorly because of the elevated heartrate. Is there a solution to this problem? Anything safe that I could eat that would lower my heartrate?

you should try riding a little earlier so that you have 1-2hours for your body to slow down & be ready to sleep. The other option is to stay up later so you get that time to unwind.

of the main mechanisms you drive the system with in intense endurance exercise is through the release of adrenalin. That's why, in part, your HR is elevated afterwards and you can't sleep.

I ride late in ny's central park. I usually push myself a little harder than usual cause once I'm actually out, I can't believe how nice it is. When I get home I eat something with a fair abount of carbs, take a hot shower, and then totally drop off.

I ride pre-dawn. You get the same low traffic benefits, and maybe you even get to see the sun rise. Your adrenaline goes to good use too since it gets your day started, and you will have no problem going to sleep at the end of the day either.

If I am on my bike past 6PM or so, I have touble getting to sleep around 10PM. I first thought it was heart-rate related but checked my heart-rate several nights I rode before trying to sleep and the heart-rate was pretty much the same as nights I didn't ride. I figure it is more due to something related to metabolism than to heart-rate; no scientific proof from me though. I just don't ride within 4 hours of wanting to sleep.

The other option is to push yourself so hard, and go so far that you bonk! Your body will sleep in this state! Not a good idea though!

I have the same problem - I find it takes about 3 hours to sleep after exercise. I find if I go to bed too early after ride it makes it worse too - I have to wait up until I'm tired.

Contrary experience here. I have to work out (on my trainer usually) most nights between 6pm and8pm. I am in bed and out like a light by 11, no problem.

I have no idea why, just a heavy sleeper I guess.

Yeah Sharkman - you probably get the optimum 3 hr gap. Once you hit that, your blood sugar should be low, your kidney's will have mopped up all the adrenelin and your heart rate will have dropped.

I went through this same exact thing 2 years ago. Riding hard (for me) later in the day was no good. Finally went to my MD...I was getting no sleep,BP was elevated, and feeling like crap. Finally devised a strategy for me. I ride after work. I have a little to munch on before I hop on the bike. I complete my ride and freshen up. I then eat and relax for the night. This pattern works for me.Good Luck. I know what your going through. I now sleep like a baby.........ZZZZZZ
