Took off my small chain ring and see that there are these thin washers between the small chain ring and the crank arms. What are these for? Is there some trick to putting this back together without growing a third hand? Do I even need them?

Also, I wasn't certain how to orient the small chain ring when putting it back on. I saw arrows etched into the metal, and I lined these up with the crank arm, and the shifting seems fine. Is this correct?

Thanks for the help!

the arrow goes inline with the crank

make sure it is faced the right way also, look at the other ring or other rings mounted on the bike- i cant remember offhand which way to face the chainring

as far as the washers i would put them back on just because- it may be that they space rings so that the derailer shifts correctly
