Recabling 3-spd shifter...Help!(8 posts)

Recabling 3-spd shifter...Help!girchygirchy

I'm currently in the process of restoring my dad's '73 3-speed bike. I'm getting ready to re-cable the brakes and shifter, and took apart the shifter cable today to see what it looks like. The end that goes into the shifter looks like a smaller version of a brake cable's end, instead of the normal shifter end.

However, on the other end of the cable is what looks to be a normal shifter cable end. So I ordered a cable that has both ends. But I got to thinking, "Hmm, how did they get the cable jacket on there, between the ends? WTF?!" Here's a picture of the situation, at the hub end of the cable. The cable disappears into the silver knurled barrel (which, incidentally, is between the cable ends too!), which is screwed into the threaded silver piece. The threaded silver thing is attached via cotter pin to the shift linkage:

Has anyone ever seen this? How the heck am I supposed to recable this bike? Are there end that I can put on myself somehow? I'm completely baffled. Thanks for any help!

If no help, just email Sheldon. He's good about giving advice.

I would start here:

There is a link on this page to parts available, it may be the cable you need will come with housing etc, already attached. I would not hesitate to call Harris cyclery, Sheldon is a frickin genius and would be happy to talk with you I am sure. Are you sure a little oil would not get this cable moving smoothly? His site is a little funky but if you poke around you will find a ton of stuff. Good luck.
Thanks guys, I tried emailing him...girchygirchy

I haven't received a reply for the email I sent last week, so I'll probably try calling if I don't get any specific help. There are some weird cable parts for the Sturmey-Archer hubs available from Harris Cyclery, I'll probably call to get clarification on what they mean, and what might fit.

The cable's actually rusty, which is why I wanted to replace it...it hasn't been touched in 30 years I'd say.

I think that's a Shimano 3-speed rear hub. You need to buy a shift cable for a Shimano 3 speed. Your LBS will probably have to special order it from a supplier like Island. Good luck!
Go to an "older" bike shopKerry

A shop that has been in business for many years will almost certainly have the cables (with the threaded barrel and casing installed). They will have sold 3-speeds over the years and will likely still be serving those customers, even if only to have a handful of cables in stock.
i'm of no help at all!! ;-)_rt_

I figured I'd try to reach as large an audience as possible, and by golly, it worked! Who cares if people read it all four times, lol?

I will, thanks! I'm heading to Lowe's this weekend for a new cotter pin, couple of nuts, and a screw, so I'll pick up some wool too.
