QR Skewer Slipping. Humma & crew, Help..LEW

Regarding below post about dropouts & slipping. My wife & I both have titanium Merckx, vertical dropouts. One with Shimano QR skewer and one with Mavic. Both will slip under low speed heavy torque unless I tighten the skewer more than I am comfortable with. I have to tighten them to the point that they are VERY difficult to release. The only fix I have tried is to "rough up" the ti dropout with sandpaper. Any suggestions?

Until about 1999, Litespeed (and most other ti bike mfrs) were very proud that they used 6/4 ti in the dropouts, BB shell, brake bridges, and a few other areas. Then they realized that 6/4 was too hard to give skewers any "bite" on the dropouts.

Unfortunately, the only solution really is to rough up the surface of the dropout, as you already have.

Both '99. And I think I do remember they have 6/4 dropouts. I may have to try to get a little rougher; heavy grit sand paper.

TJ is right about the lack of "bite" on those 6/4 dropouts; one of his erstwhile teammates lost a crit on the startline last weekend due to this.

Additionally, I don't like the cheaper Mavic skewers that came with my Cosmos. They will slip on both my 'nags. The 'cross bike with its ultra-low gearing and tendency to get torqued up hills in heavy going was a prime candidate for rear wheel slip.

I switched out the rears on both bikes for the classic early-mid 90's era Campag skewers. Heavy but daggone will they grab on and hold. these wheels don't get used for serious racing anyhow, so the added weight isn't an issue.

Back in my materials testing days, we did a study on the creep properties of titanium. Steel will "creep" when very hot, but titanium has the unfortunate habit of creeping when at room temperature.

Creep is a slow change in dimension (either stretching or compressing) when load is applied. Titanium starts to do it around 80% of its plastic limit.

Steel is real!

Do you have serrations on the gripping faces of your skewers? Are they dull, worn, or clogged with gunk or metal shavings?
