front derailleur cage not moving(3 posts)

front derailleur cage not movingcmp

I guess the winter mess was too much for my front derailleur, it will not move in when I try to shift to my small chainring. The cable is getting loosened properly when I try to shift. I tried lubing pivot points, but I really am not much at fixing bikes. I usually bring my bike into the shop for repairs, but with the weather finally warming up, I don't want to part with my bike. I have Shimano Ultegra derailleur, and my bike has only 1500 miles, so I don't think anything is worn out yet. Anyone have advice? Thanks!!!

If your derailleur is anything like my Campagnolo Chorus, it works off two pivot points that tend to get water in them and corrode/rust. It's really simple. Just take off the chain and then the derailleur, disassemble and clean the pivot joints then re-grease. If your worried about taking the chain apart and moving the derailleur, you can probably get by with shifting into the small chainring to let tension off the cable, disconnect the cable from the anchoring bolt, get to the povots and clean/re-lube them. Just put back together, pull the cable tight through the anchor bolt and tighten. That should do the trick. I like to use Phil Wood waterproof grease.

No need to take the chain apart--just use a Philips screwdriver to remove the small screw holding the cage plates together at the rear of the cage, spread the plates far enough to let the chain slip through and remove the derailleur. Just reverse this process when you've finished with the pivots.
