From "the courier mail"

A ROCKHAMPTON cyclist will undergo extensive facial reconstruction after a kangaroo ricocheted off a car and struck him.

Earl Teichmann was riding with a group of nine cyclists on Wednesday night when the roo bounced off the car, which was travelling at 100km/h, and across the road into the cyclists, striking Mr Teichmann.

The impact snapped the 36-year-old cyclist's bike frame and he fell face first on to the bitumen.

He sustained multiple fractures to the bones in his face, a broken jaw, a broken nose, a gash above his left eye and one corner of his lip was torn to his chin. The kangaroo died on impact.

The young male driver of the Corolla and his female passenger were not injured.

Mr Teichmann's wife, Connie, 34, yesterday drove to Brisbane to meet her husband at the hospital.

"Earl will be back on the bike once the doctors say he's able to," she said.

Cycling Queensland Rockhampton organiser Ian Jennings described the incident as a freak accident.

"Cycling Queensland Rockhampton organiser Ian Jennings described the incident as a freak accident."

Gee, and I thought that sort of thing happened every day in Australia.
If it happened in Canada, it would be a freak accident. ;-)nmSpunout

it's just as likely it'll be the car bouncing off and hitting the rider.
It happened here....tremblay

That very thing happened. A guy who commutes on his MTB hit a deer and died. It occurred about 2KM down the road from my house, on the same route I use to commute. The guy was flying down a steep hill on his mountain bike, a deer jumped out in front of him, and he died when he hit his head on the ground. Made the news. The people on the street were trying to make out that the road is dangerous, etc. Simple fact was that it was a freak accident.

though it was a cat and I was going only 46.7mph (12% grade + tailwind). I am glad he heard me screaming and brakes squeal, otherwise there would be 2 dead kitties laying in the middle. I missed him by a few inches.
Amazing insight: a reason not to be quoted by reporters nmPdxMark

I received this photo in an email. Here's the story: Someone called in to report a power outage somewhere in Maryland. When the line crews went to investigate, this is what they found. ... Apparently, the deer was hit by a train and thrown into the power lines. Good reason to stop at RR crossings.

An impact w/ a deer, roo, motorcycle, even the smallest Geo or Fiat can do a lot of damage to you because you have no crumple zone to protect you and your mass is a lot less than a deer or roo...
