|most of the double rings are like 48-52 (or bigger) and with only 4 or 5 speed freewheels (mostly around 14-20). 8 or 10 gears is still far less than a gazillion ....
im still convinced we are all nancy boys (well, ok .. 'cept for MB1 and his lead out chick) - they knew pain and attacked it with passion and nothing less than grand cojones.
anyone that finished a classic back then is a hero if you ask me ....

|Wonderful for us dinosaurs!
27 inch wheels, 36 spoke box rims, steel frames and the bikes probably weigh between 22 and 25 pounds each.
4 maybe 5 gears on the hub, downtube shifters, ....
Wool shorts with real chamois linings ( still have some of those!), and merino wool jerseys with cotton undershirts, leather pad gloves with mesh backs woven from cotton jute - man I loved early cycling!

|one ebay auction doesn't make that typical gearing. some used smaller combo's but not the majority and not many for racing ....
up until the early 70's it was more common for a 48/52 setup. yes, sounds wacky but most riders rode up them cols with pretty big gears compared to nowadays. till 1968 or so campy's BCd was 151 meaning the smallest chainring possible was a 44 tooth and many bikes came stock with 48/52 or thereabouts.
even jobst brandt used similar big gears till very recently i hear.
i also have a set of chainrings with a 51/53 setup - these are a TA course legere (criterium combo) for the flats.
my knee's hurt writing and thinking of all this .....
